A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Hello fellow Zs,
I have the base stereo system in my 350z, and really want to play mp3 on it, but don't want to change the head unit into something that doesn't suit the interior.
Anyone try to hook up something to the base unit?
Anyone find a perfect matching head unit that plays mp3?
thanks
S
A:

Na, but I got a kenwood out of crutchfield for $200. Looks nice.

you can get a mp3 player that puts out a radio signal, but they sound like crap
A:

if you have an ipod they make a radio transmitter called itrip or something like that. it works pretty good. it transmits a fm radio signal. if you do most of your driving outside of big cities it will probably work great because of less interferance. pick one up and try it. you also might be able to get a ip bus cable or something like that, that plugs into the back of your stock deck that outputs a 3.5mm headphone jack. i know with aftermarket decks such as pioneer ones you can do that. have you thought about xm radio. it sounds better than mp3's because of the loss of quality compared to a cd and there is an xm unit that is fully compatable that nissan or someone makes. i know it was an option when my dad bought his z. hope this helps.

I guess I don't understand the problem, so at the risk of sounding like a dumbass --- doesn't the base unit have a CD player? Can't you use Windows Media Player to convert the .mp3 files and then burn a CD?

A:

If you convert them them you can only fit 13 to 15 songs on the CD. Unconverted you could fit a hundred on a CD...or more.

now, stick a g-tech pro and a valentine 1 remote audio & visual unit in that gaping hole in the dash with a nice custom plate, and you have the perfect setup.

Where do you get a custom plate? I'd like to install a MP3 compatible CD player, a decent AM/FM radio and maybe a satellite radio, but I don't want an amateurish install job. I also don't want an FM modulator interface - wired only if you please. Any thoughts?
I have the an '03 Track, with Nav installed, so I guess I'd have to remove the existing radio/CD and install most of the equipment there. I wouldn't mind giving up the little glove box behind the passenger seat. I understand some people install electronics there.

Kevin,
That's exactly what I mean.
Something that will fit nicely, and be able to play mp3 cds or be hooked up to an mp3 player.
I found 3options:
1) Alpine are coming out with an input to their head units for the iPod.
2) PAC AAI - NIS - auxilary audio input spesifically for the 350z, but am not sure about how it hooks up. It is mentioned for with satelite ready radios
( don't know what that means).
3) Sony have a cd changer that hooks up with an RF wire and plays mp3.
This is what I have so far found, and want to help anyone with the same problem. Would love to hear thoughts or any experience with any.

your cd player has to be an mp3 cd player to play mp3 cd formated disk, they have roughly 10x the amount of storager depending on what compression you use, but these wont play on a regular cd player, you can take mp3's from your computer and burn them on a regular music cd (cd1) but you can only put on 80 min. Just buy a new deck, if you got the money some companys have ones that have built in screens that pop out and play dvd's, and some even have built in storage for mp3's, alpine just came out with one that sends ion through your skin to trick your nervers that the smooth screen actuall has button, what a trip.
A:

Stingray,
I'd love to see some pix and model numbers.
I burn MP3 CD's and play them on my DVD player (it can play MP3 CDs) that is connected to my home entertainment center, so I fully understand the technology. I would like to play the same MP3 disks in my Z. 8-10 hours of music on one CDROM is awesome since I spend 1.5 - 2.0 hours in my Z commuting to work every day. I hate short mainstream radio playlists. I am also looking at Sirius and other sattelite radio systems for my new music needs.
I'm looking for something that won't break the bank, looks nice and sounds better than the crummy sound system that comes on the Track. I don't need a kilowatt per channel - just something that can overcome the engine and road noise.
I've always been a bit of an audiophile, so I am looking for something relatively hi-tech.
Anybody have some model numbers and prices?
Kevin

Two questions:
1) Kevin - in which option I mentioned are you interested in?
2) DaddyPhatSaks - what kenwood model?

After carefully re-reading your post, it looks like none of them :-) I looked up the PAC AAI and it turns out to be an audio switch/mixer that mates various existing equipment. I want something more integrated.
I think that the Kenwood DaddyPhatSaks mentioned (or something similar) is what I am looking for.
I have Nav installed, so I guess I'll have to pull out the existing factory radio/CD and replace the keystone shaped bezel with a custom panel that can hold the replacement radio.
Does anyone know if the replacement panel is something a typical installer has in stock or can order, or will I have to get one made/painted? I've installed radios and tape decks in cars (long ago), but have not had to deal with a weird shaped front panel before.

The panel like I got is easy to get. Most stereo shops will have them, if not can order one.

I went over to Crutchfield and had a look around. I was wiping the drool off the keyboard when I noticed that all the radio/MP3 players have this caveat in the install notes:
"The factory navigation system will be lost if radio is replaced."
^%@#*!
Does this mean no more Nav if I replace the factory radio? Has anybody successfully replaced the Z's factory radio without killing the Nav lady's voice?

Hmm..never heard of that. Didnt think the nav is connected thru the stereo. But what do I know. Maybe call Crutchfield and ask. See what they say. I read a lot over at my350z and 350zonline and dont think I read any post saying this. Ill try to search around and see what comes up.

there is an input on the back of the head unit for a Nav input. that's why the Nav system can mute the radio so it can be heard when you have it set at 30.
volume control for this input is through the Nav controller, which means that the input on the head unit is a variable input type.
it's all in the service manual. y'all did download the service manual when it was avaiable, right?

I have it around here somewhere :-) I got it off a peer to peer file sharing system. Its still available on eMule, AFAIK. Also found a zillion Z movies and video clips. At any rate...
I did some research on the Nav / new sound system problem. Using current aftermarket sound equipment, you typically can't play the Nav sound through the car speakers without going through some gyrations.
There is a circuit you (or your installer) can build that mutes your aftermarket stereo, but a separate amp and speaker is required to hear the nav audio. The Nav audio output is at line-out levels and needs amplification. Most people install a separate amplified speaker for the Nav audio under the driver's seat or between the seats - At $130 USD a pop. That kinda sucks if you ask me...
I got a better idea, since I am a techie and a cheap bastard. I think I can build a small inexpensive circuit that will act like the factory nav / factory HU, that both mutes the music audio and plays the nav voice through your stock or after market speakers. It would probably be a hasle if you have a separate amplifer, but it should work fine on any sort of integrated radio/CD player with an internal amp.
I'll post more details later

Hi, Can someone give advice?
I have a track model and and Pc at home running on Window xp.
I am not a steroe fanatic, but still considering to buy one of these offers: (don't know which one is best buy for me)
http://reviews.cnet.com/MP3_players/4540-6490_7-30978806-4.html?tag=cnetfd.ld
I don't have mac system, so I was wondering which should be the best for me?

Its a 44 Mb compressed PDF file (96 Mb uncompressed!), so you better have broadband internet service if you want to download it :-)
Its waaay too big to email, so your options are kind of limited.
Just so we are all on the same "page" - the file I have is "2003 Nissan 350Z Factory Service Workshop Manual.RAR". The compressed RAR file contains 43 separate "chapter" manual files, plus the owners manual in PDF format. You need the freebie Adobe Acrobat viewer to view/print the files.
If that is what you are looking for then you can email me offline at kgmccoyzc@idk-inc.com and we can make arrangements.

I just installed a PAC AAI-NIS device that connects to the factory SAT input and allows you to listen to your iPOD through the SR1 input which sounds great. I heard just a touch of engine wine today. I ordered a PAC SNI-1 ground loop issolator that should eliminate any engine noise.
