A&Q about 350Z
Q:
I am having a problem with 2nd gear on my 6 speed manual. It is very hard to shift smoothly from 1st to 2nd. There is not much binding, but it is nearly impossible to make a smooth shift, regardless of the speed.
I have driven manual cars all my life. All my friends have tried, and have the same problems. The car is in the shop now.
I have had this problem since the car was new, and it has gotten worse, instead of better.
Anyone know of any problems with 2nd gear. I know most of the issues have related to 3rd gear. Thanks!

They couldnt reproduce the problem (picking the car up tomorrow).
Anyone else have any 2nd gear issues? Is 2nd gear just a hard one to be smooth with by nature? Its right in the peak of the acceleration curve.
Hmmm.....

Still have to be deliberate, but the lever definitely slides into place with no problems.
If not full throttle, I have to guide it a bit more. Double clutching or pushing the clutch pedal all the way to the end of its travel make it easier.
I figure it's one of those things about machinery that I have to work at on each shift. And I'll do anything to keep the dealer techs off my car.
Good luck with yours.

Same here.I find it better when i stay off accelerator while shifting to second and press clutch all the way down for best results

You do realize that you bought a sports car, right? If you want a shift smoother than a late night watching the Spice Channel go buy an Audi. Then again, you may have a defective arm that only reared it's ugly head after your limp-wristed attempt at shifting failed.

Mine was tough at first, now better once it has had time to break in good (25k miles)... also put in Redline MT-90 tranny oil and it has slicked up all the gears quite a bit! However, if yours keeps getting worse, it probably is one of the occasional bad trannies.

Heavy weight gear oil is a tricky thing. You have to realize that you will get better shock resistance for shifting and better heat dissipation and lubricating qualities, but, in turn it can result in a loss of RWHP, maybe in the 6-7 range. Realize what your going to be using your vehicle for and wether or not your budget will allow you to swap fluids on the weekends at the track. Think it through before you spend the skrilla.

Factory oil weight is 75w85. MT-90 is 75w90. Not a substantial difference.

I'll try redline. It couldnt hurt with the 105 degree heat here in Tucson, anyway. At least the issue is on record now.
thanks all!
