new tire recommendation from the tire pro!

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

hey guys,
i'm the goodyear tire guy that has been posting on this forum for the last couple of years.
there's a new tire that goodyear introduced that is priced soooooo good right now that it's something that everyone should consider for the z's, both old and new!!!!!!
the tire is called the fierce UHP (ultra high perf).
it's actually an old goodyear tire that used to be called the eagle f1 gs d2.
car and driver, consumer reports and the tire rack rank the current eagle f1 gs d3 as one of the best performers on the market.
but before the d3 hit the market we made the d2 model. the tread is almost identical to the d3. it's a AA traction, A temp tire and has a treadwear rating of 420.
goodyear doesn't currenly produce the exact sizes need for the 350z in the 18 inch version. but there are some sizes that would work. i'd recommend 245/40/18 on the frt and 265/35/18 on the rear.
just to give u and idea i'm selling the frts for $129 and the rears for $179. you might be able to find better deals from your local goodyear stores. you can call around. but for a tire at that price with those specs, i don't think you're gonna find much like it!
if your running a 300zx from 91-96, the factory size was a 225/50/16. i'm selling those for just $99.
just wanted to give u guys the heads up on this new product. you might be able to find better pricing if u do some real negotiating!

Once again the RE040 gets slammed for doing exactly what it was designed to do - heat up quickly, be extra sticky, and provide top performance.
I'm not saying anything about the goodyear - It's probably a great tire. Just responding to 72's silly statement...

Having driven bunches of 350Zs as an instructor at MSA's driving school over the past few years I can say that the handling isues (as little as they are) have nothing to do with the RE040s.
BTW... I just bought a 2006 base 350Z that will ultimately be a BSP car.

The RE040s ride rough, they're noisy even when new, and they don't corner all that well when compared to other tires that are cheaper and that have higher treadwear ratings. So it did not provide top performance - at least not to this consumer.
So you tell me: what was so silly about my statement?
A:

you're just a silly billy 72. you don't have to type anything for us to know that.

72,
You say the RE040s ride rough, I say they feel connected to the street. You say they're noisy, I say your wrong. You say they don't corner well, I say they help keep my autocross times very close to the guys running R-compounds. I autocross, drive my Z every day, take it on long trips (7+ hours), and track it on occasion. How do you test your tires?
I said silly, because I thought "stupid" would have been too harsh :) ha

I stated my opinion of them, and I'll stand by it - just as you've quite aggressively stood by yours.
A:

jjgdyr,
I notice that the 265/35/18 is almost 1.5 inches shorter that the stock rear tires. Is there a 265/40/18 obtainable in this design?
Thanks,
P.S. any idea what the shipping cost would be to Central Illinois for 4 tires?

OVERALL DIAMETER ON A 245/45/18 IS 26.6 INCHES

ON A 265/38/18 IS 25.3.
DIFFERENCE IS 1.3 INCHES.
IF U STACKED THE 2 TIRES ON TOP OF EACH OTHER AND LINED UP THE CENTERS, YOU'D FIND THAT THE ACTUAL DIFFERENCE IN HEIGHT IS HALF THE 1.3 INCHES. SO YES, THE TIRE IS ABOUT .65 INCHES SHORTER.
THE ONLY REASON THAT I RECOMMEND THOSE TWO SIZES ARE BECAUSE WE ARE NOT YET PRODUCING THE FIERCE UHP IN EITHER OF THER FACTORY SIZES FOR THE FRT OR REAR OF THE 350Z. THESE ARE THE CLOSES THINGS AVAILABLE RIGHT NOW.
I'M SURE THAT NEW SIZES WILL BE FORTHCOMING IN THE FUTURE.
MY ORIGINAL SIZE RECOMMENDATION AND TIRES ARE STILL 255/40/18 FOR THE FRTS AND 275/40/18'S FOR THE REAR USING THE GOODYEAR EAGLE F1 GS D3'S. BUT THESE ARE A MUCH MORE REASONABLY PRICED ALTERNATIVE FOR THOSE ON A BUDGET!

jjgdyr!! What sizes of this tire do you recomended for 350Zs like mine with 17 " tires/wheels?? I'd love to get this tire at a real good price for my enthusiast model! Thanks for the continuing help. A treadware rating of 420 should be a fairly high mileage tire as well. (Yes I know, guys, that TR ratings are according to the manufactures but I have had goodyear tires before and 420 is pretty high for goodyears.)
A:

dear more power:
well we're not making the fierce tires in the stock tire sizes that you need----yet.
if u want a cheap recommendation, try the fierce hp (h-rated) in the following sizes
frt 245/45/17
rear 255/45/17
treadwear 360
you might be able to find the frts for as little as $79-89 each
and the rears will probably run about $99 each.
it will give u and extra inch of rubber on the frts and rears.
so you'll add about 4 inches of rubber to the road that u didn't have before.
wish we had the fierce UHP in the sizes i just listed. so far, we do make the frts but not the rears in the sizes i just recommended.
good luck,
jj
A:

Thanks for the info. I might get the uhp fronts as my fronts need replacement soon. I have a good bit of tread left on the rears. Maybe by the time the rears need replacing, the UHPs will be available in that size for them as well. The h rated ones might be a little low on the speed rating of 130 mph for me. This is great info you give and please continue to do so! I really appreciate the help.

No way a H rated tire on the 350Z. Dangerous and probably illegal too. Any reputable dealer wouldn't put those tires on a 350Z
A:

John,
Is the Fierce a private label tire made by Goodyear? The reason that I ask is when I contacted the local Goodyear dealers they had no idea what I was talking about. When they called their Goodyear higher-ups, they were told it was a Goodyear tire made for Kelly. When looking at the Kelly web site
I see the Fierce UHP tires as you discribe and they look great. Just wondering.
Thanks again for your time and keeping everyone on top of the tire thing.

technically yes, it's a private label tire that we manufacture. not every goodyear dealer has access to the tires. but if u call around you should be able to find it.
out here in california, the tire is reserved for goodyear dealer that sell alot of tires. if you're a goodyear shop that doesn't move alot of product, the company won't give u the tire to sell.
if there is a goodear dealer in your area that owns more than one shop, u can probably get the tires there.
if u can't find a dealer in your area that carries them, tell me where u live and i'll find a dealer for you.
last year, the tire was introduced as a KELLY SPRINGFIELD TIRE ONLY. but now it's being sold the the goodyear store as the FIERCE brand. when it was a kelly-only tire, it was called the EVO Z.
jj
A:

sorry, no 19inch fierce tires yet.
A:

Gang,
I believe that if you go to the Kelly web site posted below, you will see all sizes that are avaible.

jjgdyr-
Went to my local GY dealear to have the 18in fierce UHPs installed that you recommended. They tried for over an hour to get them to seat with no success. My stocks are 225/24/18 front and 245/45/18 on rear.
Thought I'd try the F1s and they come in the 245/45/18s, but no 225/45/18 for the fronts.
Any suggestions?? Would the 235/45/18s work in front??
