Photos of the 350z race cars at Pikes Peak Hill Climb

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

First off, if you want a larger file let me know. I lost two assignments and am holding about a $380.00 short coming. For a very small (a dollar) fee i'll send the 1.6 megapixle file (2.2 mb). And if anyone wants them I'll do prints for cheap, just a little above cost.
I am a professional photographer, I use a top notch photo lab, I just got caught by weather at the event and am struggling to recoup the lost work.

what the hell! They sawpped in the Skyline GT-R's drivetrain was well, Sweet!
A:

Its hard to tell, the gtr drive train is a mechanical diff based system. While its possible that they went with that I got the impression that is was a system of 3 eletronic active differentials, much like what is seen in WRC cars, instead of a passive mechanical system. It was hard to get any information out of the team, almost as hard as it was to get information from the zelle guys two years ago.

Hmm...
I know the guy in the blue car. Tetsu "Terror"(UltimateZ) is driving that, as they left with that blue car from ZCON. Didn't know there was going to be another 350Z.
Thanks for sharing the pictures. Kevin shoot me an e-mail we might want to use a story for SportZMagazine if your interested

I've always been a Canon man myself. I shoot Canon now, and already have the lenses. They are completely interchangeable with the digi's. I already have thousands of dollars worth of Canon gear...so i'm not about to re-equip myself with nikon.
Figure if i go for the Mark II , it'll cost me about 6 grand to get in it. The body is about $5k, but also need to get a new flash...my 540EX (which cost me in the ballpark of $400 new) supposedly isn't compatible with the Mark II...so I have to buy the 550EX, and a couple of memory cards. I may have to settle for the Canon EOS 10D though. Its a few grand cheaper. I can get into the 10D for about $2500...body, flash, memory cards, and booster drive.
The canon 1D Mark II is a mean ass camera though. 8.3mp, and 8+ fps for in the ballpark of 40 consecutive frames. For as much sports as I do...thats purdy damned nice. My film camera only does 6 fps, 8+ for a digi is pretty bad ass. The 10D is 6.3mp if my memory serves me correctly.
What gear do you use?
A:

I too am a Canon man, I do my rally and track photography on rebel Tis, and my indoor stuff on an Elan I got from a guy going digital for $300.00.
I still need to get a bigger flash, the remote strobe is hard to get the timing right, although when it works it works great (I only had it for one day I shot at PP, the other day I was having the remote control replaced).
I am debating on whether to keep going with upgrading slowly with what I have and get a digital rebel next year or stop spending out right and get a d70 (I know a lot of Nikon guys so I can get great lenses cheap) or a 10d.
Can't forget the printer, I'd recommend a i9900 by canon, it is simply incredible, it gives print lab guys I know tingly feelings inside. 90 seconds for a borderless 13*19 with increidble finish and quality!

Though I know nothing about photography, it interests me very much. I am constantly taking pictures with the Olympus I got for Christmas. My family and friends admire my so-called "picture-taking skills." Hopefully one day I can pursue professional photography.
Kevin - Your pictures are amazing! I like the shots of the clouds and atmosphere the most. It also surprised me to see a Shelby Cobra rally car and a tractor trailer with a wing. Was Jesse James driving that Monster Garage Suburban?

The Big Rigs have their own class, the all blue and red ones are factory efforts. In the blue rig is Mike Ryan Hollywood stunt driver, in the red one is Bruce Canepa, the only liscensed federalizing agent of porsche 959s. They are incredibly modified. The red kentworth is an 18 month fabrication and engineering special. The white and purple machine is Mike Gibbons who races Big Rigs in special series accross the country.
The Shelby Cobra is actually propane powered. That car is a virtual regular, incredibly loud and cool to see as well, ran averaging just under 60 mph this year.
The SCCA ProRally while not up to other rallys entry list was impressive and pleasant to see, watching Shepherd, Choineire, Richard, and Styles, not to mention the brits in the ex-hyundai factory cars and of course Rhys Millen was incredible, the car control displayed was simply amazing.
Watching Robby Unser was nice as well, although Robby is an egomaniacal a$$ hat he is an extremely talented ego maniacal a$$ hat.
As for Jesse James, he was indeed running in the Monster Garage Suburban, it was plenty loud but pretty slow, he ran a 15:05.XX
In years past there have been side cars as well. These aren't your normal B movie looking side cars. The side car is actually a platform on which the passenger moves and hangs off of to help boost cornering abilities. They litterally at times hang off.
Living in Colorado I get to do a lot of skyline and cloud stuff, i have some pretty cool ones but they aren't digitize.
In all honesty if you want to get started in photography but aren't sure of your skills get a decent but cheap print SLR. You can pick up a decent body for about 200 and a couple lenses for 400 more. From there you can devellop and practice, if you think you have that it takes getting something like Canon 10D or Nikon D70 for a cheap but quality digital SLR. Learn on 400 speed, then 200, then 100 for daylight. Match the film to the brand of paper they will be printed on as well, fuji on fuji, kodak on kodak.
I got started by working for some veteran photographers, they provide me with tips and crituqe and have helped me get a couple of jobs on my own. I constantly get to review photos and composition to help enhance and develop my skills.
I personally like some of the quad photos where I used the macro. If you look carefully the quad is in proportion and focus for the main part but look at the background blur and distortion, its slightly artistic and establishes the illusion of speed.

Kevin, you got a great start...thats how you break into it, and thats how you get good. Hook up with somebody thats been around the block.
There are 3 bits of advice that I have for anybody who wants to break into photography.
#1: Look at pictures...go to Barnes and Nobile, sit down with a half a dozen photography books, and look at pictures, then look at some more pictures, then look at some more. Just don't get tied up in the nudes section. <grin>
#2: Find somebody who's been around the block...get under their wing, let them mentor you. There are some photographers out there that have FORGOTTEN more techniques than I'll ever even learn.
#3: Shoot your ass off...shoot, shoot, and shoot some more. Carry your camera around with you. Its nice if you have access to a b/w darkroom. Because if you shoot alot, like i did, processing and printing will break you. Its alot cheaper to do it yourself, and you'll learn more.
Luckily when I started off, I had access to a b/w lab. With todays digital age, thats not as much of a problem...but you'll learn more, and learn faster with film than you ever will with a digi.
That is the best advice i could give though. Shoot your ass off, and get your pictures critiqued alot.
I found my love in sports and journalism. That turned into my nitch...thats what I was good at, and thats what I liked to do. Of course...i naturally had to pick a poorly paid field of photography. Haha. If you want to make money...weddings are where its at. I personally don't like weddings...don't have the balls to do them. Am always a nervous wreck. The guy I shoot for now has to trick me into taking an assignment if it happens to be a wedding. The past 2 weddings I did, he asked me if I was available to do a shoot on a particular day...he'd wait till after I said that I was available before he'd tell me it was a wedding.
As for a printer...I'm not too terribly worried about that right now...just want the camera. The guy who gives me most of my work owns a studio/lab. He has me covered whenever I need prints.
Keep up the good work. Autoracing can be a challenge to get interesting shots. I've done IRL, Nascar, Nastruck, and one legend race. Would like to try rally sometime.
A:

Rally is my pasison, I also do a lot of road racing and drag racing photography.
For racing photography you have to be a fan to be good at it, thats my opinion.
