is there any 300zx in '84? I though the first 300zx came in '90
A:
nope there were 300zx in 84 and I'd try the alternator. Thats what it sounds like with the dying and all after it starts.

If your alt. is bad and will run for 40 sec. then die....If it's that bad then you wouldn't be able to restart the car. The battery would be dead as well. The battery is used to start your car's engine. While it is running your alt. takes over and runs the electrical system and charges your battery back up. When the alt. goes south the battery takes over. It doesn't take long to use up your battery's charge.
How did you rule out your fuel pump? Most likely it's not your injectors because it'd be very coincidental for all of them to go bad all at once. If two went out at once it'd run real rough but keep running.
If your fuel pump really isn't your problem. You might check your exhaust system. A problem with your cats could cause that. I don't know if Nissan had cats in '84 though. Partially clogged cats could build pressure and after 40 secs. build enough back pressure to stall out the engine.
I personally had a veh. do this to me once. It ended up being the fuel pump. I would turn the key on and hear it going, but once it was running it'd just kind of give out.
Hope this helps. But really you should try the 300 message board. This may be a common occurance someone over there knows about.

I also think it's still your fuel pump. Non fuel injected cars only needed about 3-5 psi to get gas from the fuel pump to the caburetor but fuel injectors need more pressure, about 60-80 psi. Check to fuel pump again.

Check your coil...
I'm not sure about your 84, but on the first gen. Zs, when the coil starts going bad it acts this way.
When you first start the car, it's fine, but as soon as the coil heats up it can't provide enough spark to fire the load. when the car quits running check the spark off the high tension lead. If the spark is blue, the ignition is OK...if the spark is orange - then replace the coil.
