Brake Pads??

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Has anybody tried changing out the brake pads and putting in new ones? If so, did you have to get new bolts or did you just use the ones that were already on there? I only say this because I tried to take the brake calipers off once and they felt like they were on there pretty good.(I thought that they may have some locktight on there to prevent them from working themselves loose) Or was I just a weak little girl that couldn't turn them off!?! (retorical question!) But anyways.... I called the parts department at my local nissan dealership and they said that new pads were about $75. Is that price ok, or should I just go to a parts store and get some from there? Because I am trying to put Nissan genuine parts on it..... I don't know if I should really bother with this since I think I may have to sell it anyways. Any info would be appreciated!

I know of at least 2 or 3 posts in this forum about brakes, which brakes to get, and how to change the brakes.

goat sucker,
Its worth it to change out the pads for the reduced brake dust alone. Go with some aftermarket pads from Hawk or EBC, check tirerack.com.
Don't buy pads from the stealership. The aftermarket pads are better and are around the same price.
get a longer socket wrench if your little girl forearms can't get the bolts off... :-) - its what I had to do on my Jeep.
don't sell the Z, get a parttime job to pay for it, you'll regret it for the rest of your like if you give up a sports car such as the Z.

I apologize if this has been posted before. But I have checked this forum before and hadn't seen this particular subject before. Don't get me wrong... I still think that it is a great car, but I don't think that a person should be going through so much when its a new car. I think that there shouldn't be any hastle what so ever from Nissan or from its dealerships when its a newly introduced car. I to had this feathering problem with my tires, unfortunitly I waited it out to try to see if Nissan would come out with a fix for the tire problem. Even to the extent of not driving the Z for 2 months to prevent any further wear to the tires... but it was to late. I had put 21090 mile when the TSB finally came out and the inside tread block was completely gone... taking with it any evedence of the tire feathing. Needless to say that at this point Nissan took the word of the dealership that said that the tires exibited NORMAL tire wear. Needless to say that I was extremely pissed off at that point. Not only did they not replace my tired, but I had to pay them $50 to give me back my car..... I think it would of been A LOT MORE if I hadn't seemed so pissed off! This just left a very bitter taste in my mouth. Especially since I also own a Honda Accord '03 and I have taken that in for things that seem to be... "trivial." A broken molding, a radio face plate that was coming off, a headliner that had a broken clip..... all done without a hitch... service guy said "give me a few days to order your parts and then I will give you a call." Sure enough... 2 days later the guy gives me a call and says that the parts are in and we can schedule for any time and it should only take 2-4 hours. 2.5 hours later the car was ready! Oh and to make thing even better, I asked the Nissan service rep if I could have a printout of the alignment numbers and guess what the guy told me..... they don't have any because their machine doesn't work and that a new one is one its way! Can you believe that BS! AAAAaaarrrrgggg! *breath* *sigh* Sorry I know that was a long rant, but that was me reason for my displeasure with Nissan. And prolly the reason I will never buy another Nissan in my lifetime! But anyways... PhatSaks, I appreciate your help! Thank You!

Wow! That is quite a story. I would never take my Z back to that dealership for anything. I would drive 35 miles one way to a different one if I had to after that BS.
Go to MY350Z.COM and search on their forum under "replacing brakes".
There is a post there that even has pictures.
You have to join their site by giving them a log on name and password.
It is a great site with a lot if information.
Good luck.

I changed to the hawks...so much less dust. Takes more time to jack up the car than to change out the pads. I got them form tirerack.com..best 60 something dollars Ive ever spent. ..............drew

Autozone has Performance Friction Carbon Metallic pads that cost $40 bucks with a lifetime warranty. They do not have the dust associated with the factory pads and the car stops quicker than with the stock pads...

Well thanks to all for their input. I went ahead and bought bads from Autozone. Their supposedly the ones made of ceramic and have very low brake dust. I don't really feel the difference, but it is always good to ride on new pads! I guess I do have weak little girly arms.... but my uncle helped me take off the calipers.... with an air rachet of coarse! Easy work when you have power tools! -_- Now the only thing I need is for him to turn the rotors cuz they had some uneven wear in them too. Is that normal? Anyways.... thanks to all for your help! And I intend on going to a different dealership from now on.
