I've seen advertised, don't remember where, a black plastic guard which installs under the front bumper to protect the paint. It looks fairly attractive. Does anyone have one ? Easy to install?

Well, I think you may be mistaken. I have one on, and it's made of ALu.
It is black and bolts up to the front under splash. It look great and is about
69.00 $ from { http://www.350z-accessories.com/ } take a look, and by the way it has saved my bacon more than once. The people at that site were very helpful and straight forward.

Interesting.. I was going to make one like that a long time ago but didnt due to the worry of curbs..

No, The thing is worth every cent. I hit a parking stop once and had to
re-insert the mounting bolt clips which also hold the under air skirt.
At this point I have nothing but good things, to say of this product.
I put it on when I bought the Z- April/03 It also has a good appearence.
It is very easy to install 15 to 20 min's.....
