2005 SLK

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

better check the JD Power rankings 280zx...Nissan ranked WELL behind MB and Chrysler in the latest car quality rankings.....
SHIFT_behindkiaquality
kc has a point..the new SLK looks like a home run....same with the new 300C Chrysler...looks like Daimler is going on a roll. Nice cars, style, performance, and ....yes..quality
A:

Incorrect, the Crossfire is based on the LAST version SLK. it has nothing to do with the NEW SLK.
88 300ZX Turbo Shiro Special (SS): K&N filter, HKS Exhaust.
God created Turbo lag so V8's could stand a chance.

A:

compared to what?.....don't forget the 2003 Nissan brochure that had the 350z designer calling the new Z design "kissable", as was reported on this forum at the time....
careful about your "chick car" comparos.....

This is the only pic i can find of the 2005 SLK. If it actually hits production looking like this, its gonna be a sweet looking ride.
I'm too lazy to look for more pictures.

Yeah, my German BMW had twice an many problems in the first year as my Z and cost 10K more. My Z is awesome no matter what these Nissan bashers say. It's all jealousy - we paid 20K less for a car that gets more attention than their yuppy girly ride. I love it.

First, the Crossfire is a previous generation SLK. Compare the specs, and they're the same down to the inch. What MB did was when they redesigned the SLK based on the C-class chassis, they took the old model, made some minor cosmetic changes, and badged it as the Crossfire. The interior is almost exactly the same, except they spray painted the black parts chrome colored and replaced the wood with metal. The fact that the Crossfire is a coupe means that it fixes some rigidity problems of the SLK, but they're putting out a softtop version of the Crossfire next year, so I shudder to think about that.
Second, my experience with Mercedes was their cars were pieces of junk. I had tons of problems with my 2001 SLK320 (with the SP1 Sport Package). Clutch failure, several electrical malfunctions, a top that needed to be adjusted three times, a catalytic converter that failed, etc. It was bad. You know how Mercedes gives you a loaner car whenever you take your car in the shop? One of my neighbors thought I worked at Mercedes, since he always saw me in a different Mercedes.
Mercedes used to have a good reputation, but their cars have really fallen badly. I spoke with a lot of people and they were having as many problems as I was having with mine. But no one would talk about it because MB had such a stellar reputation -- it was like the emperor's new clothes. The 2003 JD Powers and Associates article showed Mercedes as below industry average (incl. Nissan, Chrysler, and even Ford).
After being fed up with Mercedes unable and unwilling to fix the problems I was having, I got rid of my SLK320 last year and bought my 350Z, which I love. It drives better, it's faster, it handles better, and it hasn't given me any problems. Buying the SLK was the worst car decision I've ever made.

I'm not gettin' it here. I could list two dozen cars I'd rather have than my "Z" if I wanted to spend more money. Come on, be car guys! If you want to make a comparison, make it with something equal in cost to the "Z"!
BTW, these vaunted "J.D.Power" rankings are upside down with "Consumer Reports". Frankly, based on my own personal experience, and the anecdotal evidance of my freinds and aquaintances, I think I'll stick with "Consumer Reports".

SLK ? might be good or bad. Don't know. The picture of 2005 (from front ) looks good, but still looks like a mini mercedes. I haven't seen the real one, but the previous version ... I think they all look like small/mini/baby mercedes. Not sure if it's really small in measurement. But when car looks small, it's becoming a cheap toy. A class of Miata. Small car has the reputation of cheap. (only for teenager). SLK from side is too short OR perhaps the proportions make it looks short if it's not. The trunk is too short. (just like BMW Z3. Z4 looks slightly grown up, lucky, but still too short at the back, as if somebody cut it). Accident ? on behind?
If you really buy the SLK, I recommend you do some tuneup on the body. Lowered, Big wheels, wide body, bumper, etc... I had see some.. and they looks a lot better after that, and I also like it.
