ok, so this guy in a 540i tries to speed up and take me today. after he loses miserably, he says "well mate, i really didn't open it up. if i had, i would have burned you." i suggested that it sure looked like he was trying to burn me... but that his problem is the weight of the car, not the size of the engine. he immediately quoted me his 290hp rating.

He was just emabarrased and wanted you to think he really could have nailed you. I embarrased one a few month ago on a tight two lane curve. I passed him on the outside and he already had a pretty big head start. I could tell he was at his limit. The color of his face turned pure white.

I love the Z, but a 540 runs the same 0-60 sprints as a 350z, and runs a very equal 1/4. It is a drivers race if the cars are both sticks. Maybe on the curves you'd lose him, but a straight the cars are neck and neck.

tommy, if you are talking off the line then the two cars have similar numbers, but when you are already moving things change. It is a different story on the highway. This, according to the post, was not off the line.

Where are you getting 6.2, that is not close. Also 5.3 for a 350z? stock? Nissan states 5.4, motor trend gets 5.8 seconds, Look at current post about 0-60 times. I am not trying to get in a pissing match at all, but it is a drivers race, a 2003 540 sick is a 5.4 0-60 car as well.

Um no. It's probably used a lot because that's what it probably is. 540 is just as fast as the 350Z. So is the ~4100 lbs Chrylser 300C but it's a bit faster with its 5.3 0-60 and 13.9 1/4 mile.

The z sure is pretty, awesome looking car. Represents great all around package. There are some numbers from motortrend on the 540I, those are 1997 figures and the car evolved and became a touch faster over the years.

it's also in a completely different price category. if i threw another $16K at the Z, it'd beat most cars out there.
heck, if i threw $50K at something, it would probably be the C32AMG. why screw around?!?

there is a sang at the track, bring what you bring. Price is not the issue. I could build a 8 sec 1/4 mile car for 50 grand. I have a high 9 lo 10 car that has been built for 30 grand, a 1966 coronet Rt with 8 point roll cage, 23 inch MT tires a blown 426 hemi. I am happy you beat the BMW, one more kill in the Z column. By saying he didn't open it up you assumed that you smoked him, and maybe you did. In the hands of competent drivers they are very close cars in the straight line.

The biggest problem with the 540i (6 speed) is the clutch delay valve. It's in place to cut down shift errors and over-revving. It considerably slows the driver's gear shifts. Alot of the bimmer guys just bore it out. This usually shaves a few tenths of a second of th 0-60 and quarter mile. Just my .02 cents.
