Top of steering wheel leather peeling!

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

agree with sptbiz... oily hands cause steering wheel leather to deteriorate faster, esp. where you hold the wheel. I know, this happened to my old Eclipse GSX.

so is problem that i'm garbbing the steering wheel where i not suppose to or is it inferior material?
the drivers hands are suppose to touch, grab, squeeze the steering wheel. this is expected and normal. what is abnormal, it seems, is for the leather to show signs of deterioration with minimal miles on the odometer.
if anyone has brought this up with a dealer yet, please post what their response/solution was.

My son and I both grab the wheel in ~ the same location at the top. I realize that we grip it tight. The area on the wheel that we grip has a worn appearance compared with the rest of the wheel cover. BTW, do all of the Z steering wheel covers have a bulge in the stitching on each side of the wheel ? Mine does and I've seen the same bulges in a couple of interior photos of other Z steering wheels.

yes it is purposely like that

Seat tilted waaaaay back, slouched to the right and grabbing the top of the wheel?
Sorry, but I can't figure out how you consistently grab onto the same exact spot at the top of the wheel every time with enough force to debrade the leather surface.
Help me understand, okay?

It's really not that difficult. The steering wheel isn't that big and the tendency to grasp the same area of the wheel while driving is normal. I suggest that you sit in your car and practice. Eventually you'll get the hang of it. BTW, most drivers wouldn't slouch to the right and grab the wheel. If they slouch at all the tendency would be to slouch to the left into the door and grab the wheel. You have some very odd driving habits.

So you tell me how it happens.

If you are that bored ( as most board flies are ) I suggest that you contact a fabrics or textile engineer and let him or her explain the process that causes a surface to wear from repeatedly grasping and sliding your hand over that area . Come to think of it, based on your postings that I have read, I'd say that you probably have alot of experience grasping and sliding your hand over a sensitive area !

But I don't constantly worry the same spot every time. I guess it appreciates variety. That might work for you in other areas, too ....
So no answer to the Q: Why the same spot on the wheel all the time? Okay, I'm done. Take it in and get Nissan to swap it for you. Good luck.

Who's complaining ? This isn't even my thread and I'm not the one with the damaged steering wheel cover. It's 350Z Track's thread and he has the damaged wheel cover. I offered a possible explanation as I noticed some wear on my steering wheel where I grip it. Just some minor wear. No big deal and I have no intention of bringing it up to Nissan. So, quit harrassing me over this stupid topic. IMO you have far too much free time on your hands. Quit spending so much time lurking on message boards ( 1911 posts ! ) and hanging around that Albertson's parking lot ! ( doesn't present a good image of Z owners ). Do something more productive like maybe get a job as a courtesy associate at WalMart ! Geesh !
