It begins immediately. It becomes audible only when the tires have worn sufficiently. The exact number of miles seems to vary from car to car.
However, you can feel the wear on the tire long before you can hear it. Search this board for "sawtooth" to get an explanation of how to check for early signs of wear.
Good luck.

a fair number report the noises beginning in earnest around 6K miles. i would agree... that's when i first noticed it.

mine became noticable at about 8500 miles.

I second tx350z's answer to be accurate and objective! FYI, I have been through several sets and they have all consistently shown the wear problem between 3,000 and 4,000 miles.
A:
Mine began to become noticeable at 6K, replaced the front tires and all four wheels alignment.
Then at 12k miles, replaced the front tires again and had the latest TSB alignment performed.
At speeds less than 30mph and when braking was when I knew I had feathering.

Actually, the best thing about trading in the Z was finally removing Nissan's service department from my speed dial.

Now he's got BMW in his speed dial.
