Radar detector - help!

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Other than for V1(too expensive) what's a reasonable radar-detector?
A:

Escort Passport 8500 is a inexpensive alternative ($230 on ebay).
A:

ah, c'mon, roomiz, the difference is like $150, and the V1 is clearly superior. passport is legacy technology. sure, you can by pentium 2 computers really cheap today... but would you really want one?
most of the guys on this forum spend more on modded shift knobs than on their radar detectors. dang shame.

i agree with 350znewbie. You will end saving hundreds or thousands of dollars in your Z lifetime with the V1. It has saved my ASS so many times!!!
A:

I agree with the others...better to spend the extra for the V1. I have another reason why--I bought one about 5 yrs ago, and just wanted to upgrade to the slimmer one. I was able to sell mine on ebay for $330 (paid $400 originally) and get a new one for $400. They hold their resale value!!

Go with a Valentine ! it is worth the money and it will save you time and money in the long run.
A:

Damn!! I want a radar detector... I can't get them in Canada (well Ontario)... stupid legality issues.... screw them!
A:

the v1 is the only way to go. it has save me enough times to pay for a 280z. be sure to hardwire it as well. remember you can alway upgrade the v1 at a small price compared to buying the upgrade to a pasport 8500 whenever that may come.

i'm sorry, i didn't really check what a zr-3 was. i didn't realize you were moving into jammers. in my state, and most of the country, i believe jammers are or will be illegal, and the fines are HUGE.

the zr-3 only jams laser, which is perfectly legal all over the country.

When zr-3 is used with the passport 8500, all the display goes to the radar detector. The zr-3 unit itself can be hidden completely out of site. If zr-3 is used byitself, the display module (ugly) has to be visible. This was the factor that made me pick 8500 over V1. Otherwise I believe the V1 is a better detector. Laser is starting to used more frequently on I-287 and I-80 in NJ. Are there any other reputable companies that make laser jammers out there?

from here:
March/April 2003 - SML investigated New Radar and Laser Gun Technologies published in the March/April 2003 issue of Police And Security News. Of special interest was field testing of new methods of defeating radar detectors and laser jammers. MPG Industries Inc. now offers a new 67 millisecond POP mode that transmits a 33.8 GHz Ka band radar signal so fast radar detectors can's see it. Laser Atlanta is offering a "Stealth" mode whereby the Speed Laser's pulse rate is disguised thwarting laser jammers. The article also investigates the ability of laser guns from Kustom Signals, Applied Concepts, Inc (Stalker), Laser Atlanta, and Laser Technologies Inc. (LTI) to operate through the windshield and in poor weather conditions. An in-depth discussion of the advantages of new "directional radar" is given and maximum ranges of older analog radar guns are compared to their new digital ...
i hope it's still a good investment!
