escort 8500 in VA?

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

I just ordered the new Escort 8500 x50 and hope to have it in time for a trip from NC->PA. The marketing lingo for the 8500 series mentions that it is detector-detector proof. Do I dare attempt to turn my radar on while driving through the lovely state of Virginia?
btw, I'll be making the trip in my Jeep, not the Z, so I shouldn't attract the elevated attention that the Z does.

given consideration that the literature may be true, why risk it?
if you had a valentine 1, this would not be a problem. the V1 is not a superhet detector, operates on frequencies completely out of the range of normal detection.
you can't imagine how much it helps to know which direction the signals are coming from; the V1 is considered a radar locator. instead of reducing the sensitivity for city and then having to remember to turn it up for highway, you can just look at the indicators and realize you're reading the door opener at the drugstore to your left -- at full sensitivity.
all other detectors seem puny, earthling. best money you can spend.

I got a ticket in Ohio a long time ago on a trip and never knew where the cop was that snagged me. I do remeber though the road stretch was long rolling hills... perhaps I got VASCARed way back then.
I'm guessing VASCAR is mostly used during the day?
VA-DC-MD ... looking forward to this trio of states...

Knowing the cops tricks is as important as the real-time info the V1 provides. The guy tailgating you up the hill at 80 mph, may not be your average aggressive driver. : ( Then just be nice and professional about it and you may just get a warning. : )

I got caught in NC last weekend doing 90 and I never even saw the guy. I was the only person on the road and I'm paranoid and still can't figure out how he got me but that mustang police car ran me down in a heart beat.

knightkrawler... Did you have a radar detector at the time?
Where were you in NC?
Our Staties also have Camaros (marked and unmarked)... so we have the fun of looking out for 3 diff. body styles in addition to paint and license plate format. Not sure this is always the case but, if you see a plate with SHP as the first letters, back off...

Yep..we have BMW, Camaros, Impala and Stratus....all unmarked! Seen several camaros and impalas with dark tinted windows. Damn unmarked cops!

My son got nailed in VA on Hwy (interstate?) 81 near Winchester, VA. They are very very strict on speeding and the judge says he has "drawn a line in the sand" if it's over 90 mph. That means he will likely give you jail time as well as mega fines! If over 90 mph, you need a lawyer brother Z guys/gals. Be afraid. Be very afraid. Best to go no more than 10 mph over the speed limit and that's at your own risk. As stated, radar detectors are illegal and won't save you from VASCAR, anyway.
In MD, the state troopers at night are very tricky. On multilane (each way) roads they will play this (and other) game(s) with you. Typically with you criusing in the right lane (as you should, at or below the legal speed limit)They will come up on you in the left lane, from behind at night (unmarked cars!) and get almost right in your blind spot, er... more or less, but not to the point where you can't see them. Then they will cruise in your blind spot (speeding up, slowing down, whatever it takes to maintain their rolling road block), but not so much that you can't see them there. But not so visible that you can easily identify them as they stay behind you. They WANT you to see their headlights, but at night in unmarked cars, from behind, they don't want you to know they are state bears! Then they will cruise in your blind spot until you overtake slower traffic. So... at that point you either have to slow down behind the car you're overtaking as the state bear has blocked you out of the other lane by being "visibly" in your (almost but not quite) "blind" spot. Or... as they want, you see this all developing and speed up enough so that you can "safely" change lanes in front of them (state bear) and pass the car you're overtaking. Well, they'll speed up a little too as you attempt to do this. But not quite like they're racing you.?.? More like just a regular old jerk being an a$$ or a good 'ol boy just wanting a friendly race with your sleek Z car. And they'll attempt to irritate you with all this so that you go on and speed up enough, in righteous indignation, to change lanes and get in front of them (state bear). In order to avoid getting stuck behind the slow traffic you are over taking. Darn good chance you're speeding at this point... So they get to act like a$$es on the front end and then give you a speeding ticket to boot on the back end of the deal. Yeah, they are just that kind of guys/gals. They are masters of these and other insidious games... If there is any doubt, at all, about who that is messing with your mind, at night, in an unmarked car in MD, in your blind spot, blocking the whole dam road...let the jerk go on by. The driving record you save may be your own. If this is not entrapment, it is something @!!!$$!!, but you'll have one hell of a time explaining this in court if you think you can beat the rap. It's not about safety, they call it "revenue enhancment". There should be a special place in hell for jerks like this IMHO. I was lucky as I only got a warning. Thank God I was in the minivan that time instead of my 350 Z or I bet there would've been noooo mercy. Beware.
