Nitrogen tires

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

and what do you hope to accomplish by this?
A:

lol, thats funny. I remember back in highschool this guy in a toyota corolla said he was going to put helium in his tires. I just shook my head at him and walked away.
A:

Helium will leak out of the tires as the molicules are too small and will leak out of the rubber. On the other hand nitrogen will not expand as much as air when heated. I do not think it is going to buy you anything in regard to an automotive application. I used to work on the SR71 program and it used nitrogen on the tires as they got really hot. Plus they were 22 ply BFGoodrich tires that were aluminized to keep them from blowing out...

Wow, SR71, I'm glad I'm not the only "engineer of some years" on this forum :-)

Yep, the 'Habu' is still one of my favorite birds and programs to this day.

Nitrogen gas in place of 'ordinary' air has been used for some time by racing teams. Pure nitrogen expands less and there is less pressure build up under racing conditions. Those of us who have taken their Z's to the track have seen tire pressures rise by as much as ten-to-twelve degrees F.
However, unless you are racing or tracking your Z, I doubt it's worth the time and expense.

Thank you for a straight answer.

Hey vonsudderth. Regarding your post of," I used to work on the SR71 program..." Sorry to butt in this thread and sorry my post is not about my 350Z (they usually are). I was temporarily stationed in the Air Force, back in 1985, at RAF Mildenhall, England. First day I was there...I saw an SR71 take off and a WWII Spitfire flying around. Man, the SR71 takeoff with afterburners lit was an acceleration thrill and it made some thunder!!! When you're hot, you're hot! I'd just gotten through the approx. 9? hour trip from Charleston AFB, SC, on a C141, I was a long way from home, and that SR71 takeoff made my day! Sorry to butt in...now back to the thread and Z cars. Yeah, I've heard that about heat and nitrogen in the tires and I agree it'd probably only help a 350Z much in a race of some duration. Interesting though.
