A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Ive been looking online for a while without finding my answer. maybe someone here can help me. Im 5'11" and when I put a helmet on for autocrossing I have to put my seat all the way back and recline the seat so I can drive somewhat normal. I figured all I really need was a little more space between the helmet and ceiling of the car. Does anyone know if any company make a "low profile" helmet that still meets the snell requirements. THANKS!

eh...i really dont want to redo my seat. but I will have to play with my seating set up seat and steering wheel. someone should just make a smaller helmet. or I will probally have to find one and remove padding.

Smaller helmet = deader brain
The reason why SA rated helmets (auto racing) are larger and more expensive than M rated helmets (motorcycles) is because SA helmets are designed to withstand impacts with object inside the vehicle. A head whiplashing and hitting a roll bar can impart well over 50 Gs to the skull.
You'd have to be raised dozens of feet in the air and dropped straight on your head on pavement to see the same shock loading (motorcycle) - that's why motorcycle helmets are smaller, lighter, cheaper overall.
I'll take the thick SA2005 helmet, thank you very much!

Don't know about that.. the only difference construction wise, primarily, is that motorcycle helmets are designed to take one impact, whereas SA helmets are designed to take many hits.
What most riders consider a 'good' helmet cost 400+, the 'better' good helmets are over 500.

Motorcycle helmet shells are designed to disintegrate on the first impact. This sounds backwards, but it displaces alot of energy from the impact into the shell and not into your brain. If you ever drop a motorcycle helmet from about waist high onto a hard surface its junk. It might not look it, but the shell is compromised and it wont protect you the same in a real accident.
SA helmets are thicker because A: The shell is thicker to take more impacts as zlover57 stated. and B: They require more foam / impact damper to protect your noggen because the shell transmits more energy inwards. More expensive helmets use better damping material and can be made thinner. If you find a fix, let me know cause Im also too tall.

A friend with an NSX is 6'2 and had a lot of issues with this. He ended up getting his seat lowered an inch and a half by making custom seat rails and taking some of the cushion of the seat. I think he spent 800 dollars total though.

try and find a place in your area that sells helmets, or your local track should have a few different kinds....try them on and sit in your car to see if they make a difference over your current helmet

The seat is the rail. The rails do not unbolt as they are the bottom part of the track and the upper part of the track is the bottom of the seat. So, unless you cut the mounts off the tracks and shorten the amount of steel you will need to replace the seats. I saw a set in a G35 that were Sparco and they looked quite nice. The guy was something like six foot six inches. He loved the seats. However, the side airbags are not hooked up and that causes the airbag system not to work. I told him about the plugs that he could get from Nissan to eliminate the airbag light. But, since he already set it off he would have to take it in to get it reset. If you remove your seats to do any work be sure to disconnect the battery before you take them out. If you do not the airbag light will come on and you will have to pay to get it reset.
