Auto vs. Manual

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

i will not be giving up my zx convertible that is already a 5 speed, so my question is: is it worth the extra $1800 to have a touring model in a 6 speed manual as opposed to the auto transmission?
i have always preferred a manual but the tiptronic is also fun to drive...what do yall 350 owners think?

Personally, if I already had a 5-speed "Z" that I was intending to keep, I'd get the auto. But, make sure you check the differences. The 6-speed touring comes with a lot more than just a different transmission.
A:

I think Nissan screwed people like me that feel a manual is what a sports car is all about. There's nothing special about the transmission either. For the cost of the manual we should be using paddles on the steering wheel! Oh well, I like the car but still hate the feathering.

You are dreaming, pal. There's not a manufacturer on the planet that is going to give that technology away.

sports car=manual transmission

You ride in cars with automatic transmissions.
You drive cars with standard transmissions.
Sports cars are made to be driven.

i agree, autos and triptonics r for women
A:

some people like riding in cars... whats your point. I am sure that there are many women that would be offended by your comments digital. A few of whom I know. besides didnt your already give your opinion once on this thread. why are you trying to start crap. Yes tell all those dragracers and proffesional race car drivers that tiptronics and autos are for women. I think that they would beg to differ.

The 350 has an awesome automatic! It keeps me from getting speeding tickets as well as all the SoCal gridlock traffic.

paddle shift = manual transmission with electronic clutch actuation.
Your point?
A:

I Love the Automatic! I drove them both. The 6 speed was just too busy for me. Plus, IMO, the auto was way "zippier" than the manual. It was just too much shifting for me. My .02 worth. giZmo
A:

Its a matter of choice or situation. I do alot of city driving so I chose the auto. No regrets there.
Don't listen to all the macho talk about manuals. You said you already have a 5 speed zx so that should please the forums manly gods :o
Do listen to the comment about differences in the touring auto and manual. That may alter your decision.

I had the same issue: Auto Or Manual. I have been driving manuals all this time (except 300ZX 2+2 was an Auto) and I chose Auto. The reason was to relax while driving and when the need arise I use the triptronic. I have raced a manual (he is a member of Texas Z club) and we were neck to neck. He was impressed with the Auto tran. Go with it. Only a-holes like digital and Daves#3 have issues with their John's size. Just ignore them!

I have the 5AT. It's not as good as it could be.
The tiptronic mode is no replacement for a manual. You cannot use it for engine braking when entering a corner. It is far too unpredictable.
The 5AT in auto mode might be ok for straight-line sprints if you learn to work the gas to control the shifts. It could give you a little edge against a manual if the driver isn't good with shifts.
In the twisty-windies, there is no replacement for the 6MT.
