"10%-30% drivetrain loss is the average?????????? Where did you get that figure from????? It should be no more than 15%"
zness did I miss something-15% is between 10%-30%
A:

Then just say 10-15% drivetrain loss, wiseguy...

"if your not a really good manual driver an auto will hang with you all day long".
True. But not if I'm driving the manual...

8 to 10 % loss in a Vette or Porshe. Lighter rotating parts up front of the trans is important. Light flywheel and light pistons. Titanium is good (Ducati Bike). Light drive shaft, light rotors, light wheels light tires, and put all that mass close to the axis of rotation.
Some people upgrade to big rotors, big wheels, and heavy tires, and see big decreases in rwd and awd hp. Sit in a rotating chair and set yourself in a spin and then hold your legs and arms out and see how you slow down, even though your weight hasn't changed.
As someone else said, there are some car makers who also don't inflate the advertized flywheel HP figure. The turbo Neon comes to mind which is quick for a cheap car.

I don't think it's really fair to say japanese companies overrate the hp numbers. I believe they are pretty accurate; in general, as ZNESS knows, there is much more to a race then simply the hp. The bimmer has the RWD advantage over both the altima and accord, that's good for probably 1-2 cars EZ in the 1/4, and more so if the RWD car has excellent tires w/ a good driver. The supra, nsx, skyline, and rx-7 just to name a few have very little drivetrain loss, some with RWHP numbers identicle to the claimed hp levels for whatever reason on the supra and skyline. The accord and altima weren't built with lightweight less durable parts like a Porche because of cost and they need to last 200,000 miles. I love Bimmer's but their increase in sportiness comes back to get you in maint. and parts.
