oil consumption report

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

ok folks...oil comsumption report is over..the car is losing 5/30 weight oil to the tune of 25 milimeters on the dip stick at the final reading. It got progressively worse as the readings went on.i think it was a total of a about 1500 klm. readings were approx 1 week apart.i believe this car was consuming from day 1... not a lot but between oil changes it adds up to quite a bit. Dealers do not measure the oil when draining system between checks, they just drain it away and add the proper amount, so this is why i believe it went unnoticed. Between its 24,000 check and 32,000 check(29.500) driving down the road with chatter chatter it was down 3.2 litres and i believe something happen to motor at this point. One person here said if it was bothering me so much flog the car. Problem is i like the car.Now i believe the dealer is trying to sluff off there responsibility . Nissan tech now loads up car with 10/30 weight oil and want readings again. Why do you think they want to put thicker oil in?? The service manager says that some engines run 10/30 weight , but i believe they all come from japan with 5/30 in them. I live in pacific north west.... (mild weather really). Could it be they are trying to figure out were this oil is being consumed so they can repair or maybe replace drive train( valves seats, rings, etc). Want constructive input if possible. 2005 PPW (37.500klm)..keep a close eye on your oil levels between dealer visits....

No,
The car is supposed to use 5W30 unless you are in the desert where it gets really hot. That is when 10W30 is allowable. If the bonehead at the dealership is trying to pump sunshine up your butt they are mistaken. Take it back and then get with the owner of the dealership. Then the zone rep and finally call Nissan directly and start the process of getting it on record. Get the dealer to print out the service record that shows how many times it has been in for using oil. No thicker oil is going to solve a ring problem. It will only slow down the process and you will be stuck with a car that burns oil out of warranty. If you are using more than a quart every 1500 miles they either tear it down and re-ring the engine or replace it. Finally, if they will not do this get a lawyer and they will end up buying it back and paying your legal fees. The only thing that they are not responsible for is tax, insurance and registration you have been out. Raise hell and it will get your problem solved. Stop letting them pump sunshine...

The car takes 5w30. The dealer is jerking you around, consumption is consumption, it should not fail on service-manual recommended oil.
Again, yours is not the only Z doing this, and they give people the consumption-test run-around for months before doing anything about it. This engine is probably unhealthy and will eventually have problems, like vonsudderth said.
Which dealer is this?

You drove 5,500 klm and the engine oil was down 3.2 litres? That's 3300 miles and 3.4 qts.
So you got to 2.6 qts in a sump that's supposed to hold 5? (1.55 litres in a sump that should have 4.75.) And you were checking your oil level every week?
Did you top the oil off or just watch it go down?
Maybe I missed previous episodes ....

I was letting dealer do ALL the service work.Drive the car in at 8000klm.....dealer did service and then go about my business, 16,000 klm, drive the car in and dealer did service, go about my business, 24,000 klm drive the car in and dealer did service,go about my business. it was after this service and close to the 32,000 that the terrible noise(clatter clatter clatter) started this whole process. Rolled into another dealer at that point and they told me that crankcase was down 3.2 litres. /they topped up and I was told to go to dealer that did last service(24,000).
This is when i started to montor my own oil.Up to then i really did not think i had to monitor oil on a brand new car with 24,000 klm on it.So between 24,000klm and 32,000klm i believe the oil consumption got worse hence
the chatter chatter chatter. the oil was probably not down 3.2 for 5.500klm,
but it was losing gradually for a long period.
