well, if you had the money, would you be driving a 2004? haha, I'm sure he has a whole fleet of cars anyway
A:

ya, i was a little surpised someone that must have lots of money like that would buy a Z in the first place.

A:

yeah, definitely. If I was rich and famous, the Z wouldn't be my choice. I love it, but when you've got a lot of wealth at your disposal many new choices are out there
A:

He already have a ferrari and a bentley. So I guess he's just trying out something new. Modifying a car is challenging and rewarding if done right, so I guess he picked the 350Z for his tuning hobby.
A:

I'm somehow discomforted with you and your new found crew stating that people with enough money would know better than to buy a 350Z.
Your insight is always amusing.. and your criticism is now put in its proper place.

I used to work part time at a major turbo performance center. I have driven a
lot of high powered, more expensive cars than my 350Z. I can say with
conviction that my stock 350Z is more fun in everyday driving and curves than
most hi price, high power exotic cars. Now those cars would be faster at the
track, for sure, but my 350Z has great power and torque in curves without
even trying - you can always come out of a curve with good oooomph. I have
driven very high power supras that were peaky in power and much less fun in
everday driving than a stock 350Z. I could be driving a Corvette, and many of
you could as well, but I like my 350Z better. Maybe it's that the suspension
just happens to be setup just like I like it and it's just me. But I just like the
feel of the car in everyday performance driving and curves better than most of
the much more powerful cars I have driven. But yes, prestige wise, I'm sure
you'd get more looks with the 930 twin turbo Porsche the owner of the shop
had. I have driven that car and it does not feel as good (to me) in curves as
my 350Z. The power is more peaky. But both cars are FUN. I'm telling you,
our 350Zs are very good at delivering very good all around performance in
the real world for a very economical price IMO. Now I did not say it was
capable of staying with those cars in an all out race at the track. That is
a different kettle of beans, altogether. Yes, you can call me "double wide"
and walmart shopper and that's true, but I love my 350Z.
Having said all that, I am going to modify my 350Z for more fun at the
track as well. I do like both the hi performance, too.

saying that in a situation where you don't have millions though, if you actually did the mindset may be somewhat different! Or not! Hypotheticals are fun...
A:

Agreed. There are many fun cars I have enjoyed driving. And if I could I'd
own a lot of nice performance cars. But one of them closest to my heart
would be my 350Z. Some cars have grown on me; some have not. She has
a special place in my all- time best garage.

I might have a ferrari too... i've always loved them... the 360 Modena Challenge Stradale...mmmm...
i'd probably only drive it on weekends though... but i'd have to be in that situation first to really say...

I agree, the P-51 Mustang was a great little fighter plane in it's time. It
had the same supercharged V-12 Rolls-Royce Merlin engine that the British
Spitfire also had. The difference was that the Mustang has a much longer
range. It could escort bombers all the way to Berlin and back whereas
the Spitfire was a short range, defensive fighter that helped win (or at
least stale mate) the Battle of Britain. In fact Chuck Yeager, a WWII Ace in
P-51s and the first man to break the sound barrier in 1947 (not in a P-51,
ha), said that what the Spitfire could do for an hour, a Mustang could do
for 9 hours. Many feel the Mustang was the best fighter plane of WWII
and was one of the fastest if not the fastest piston engined, propeller
driven planes of WWII. In the H model P-51, which came in late in the
war, the supercharged Rolls Merlin V-12 engine developed 2250 hp. It
could hit 472 mph in level flight. Mustangs even shot down some Me 262
German fighters, the first jet fighter deployed. And that Rolls Merline V-12
engine sounds beautiful. Chuck Yeager shot down a ME-262 German jet
fighter. He and some of his buddies of the time fly a squadron of P-51s
these days - I have seen them several times at the annual air show at
Andrews AFB. It sure was a pretty little plane. I was in the Air Force for a
while in the late 1970s to early '80s, as you can probably tell, he he.
Here is my current favorite
fighter, the mighty F-22 Raptor:
Here is my previous favorite fighter, the mighty F15 Eagle. It can pull up
the landing gear, go immediately into a 90 degree climb and accelerate
though the sound barrier in that straight up climb. The F22 is set to
replace the F15 now, but the F15 will always be special IMO.

F-15...war machine. I loved those freakin airplanes. An aggressive fighter jet with incredible peformance capabilities. I was never a huge fan of the f-18, although I know it is a very versatile fighter.

Hey CantZmee, I am also a big fan of Corsairs as well! Arguably the best
fighter of WWII along with the P51 and P47 (p47 for its ground attack prowess
and toughness moreso than dogfighter). Marines were tough in Corsairs and
the Navy eventually was flying them off carriers as well right? (There was
a problem landing on carriers with that gull wing till the Limey's figured it
out, ha) Loved the old "Black Sheep Squadron" TV show. I think recently
the F14 Tomcat got retired, alas. A great plane and expecially in it's role.
Out on the ocean, defending the carrier with that Phoenix air-to-air
missile, the longest range air to air in the world, it was the baddest thing
in the sky. The F15 and F14 do a demo every year at the Andrews air
show. Very hot. The F18 is more versatile and up to date with computers
and can instantly switch from fighter to attack mode and all, but I agree, it
does not create the visceral reaction of an F14 Tomcat on the prowl on full
afterburner. I was involved with that task force in spring 1986 that hit
Libyan nutcase kahdaffi (can't spell his name and don't like him anyway).
My group was flying the FB 111 fighter bombers out of RAF Mildenhall,
England. We were a small part of a large attack force. Shut kahdaffi up
pretty good and he stayed shut up. FB111s have been retired now as
well. Technology marches on...
My father worked for Lockheed, CantZmee, when Kelly Johson was there.
Bet you know who he was. Father of the SR-71 Blackbird and other
planes. First day I got to RAF Mildenhall, I saw a Spitfire fly over and an
SR-71 Turbo Ramjet take off. Man that thing makes some noise. Did you
know that when the SR-71 was cruising at Mach 3.2, it was only at 30%
throttle?!? Hot damn! The AF admitted that it could hit Mach 3.5 at
125,000 feet but it could go faster when it need to, ha. Ruskies fired over
1000 missiles over time at it and one time scrambled over 100 MIG 25
Foxbats at once chasing it, but noooooo cigar, ha. (Ruskies sold us the
titanium that we built the SR-71 out of, he he.)
Here is one of the new vectorable thrust Pratt and Whitney engines,
35,000 lbs thrust in the F22 (Pratt and Whitney motto: "In thrust we trust").

Wow....sorry to hijack the topic! I just meant if your blowing the kind of money some of you guys are talking about for some of the very exotic cars you can still have a far bigger rush for the same coin by purchasing a warbird for much higher speeds and a added dimension for a bigger adrenalin rush than any car. It's all relative right? There is always going to be someone who is faster and there are always going to be new cars, planes, computers, and erection creams that work better than their predecessors. There is nothing wrong with aspiring for more but enjoy what you have. If you're lucky to have a 350Z it's more car than so many in this world will ever have. Next time you go for a ride think about that when your digging into a corner. Satisfying all by itself isn't it.
Hey Sharp: Yeah, born in Greece, raised in the states!
Mo Po: Cool about being in the Air force...what did you do there? I fly some full scale aircraft but really enjoy RC warbird building and flying in formation. A bunch of us have a real blast flying around together at local air shows at aprox. 100+ mph flat and level. I have a few buddies with true turbine jets pushing 280mph.......that is damn scary on a high speed flyby let me tell you! As far as the P51: it was at the time, the tech leader as you know but eventually superseded again and again earning the name "led Sled" by the end of the Korean conflict. So too all the others including the F15, 16 and soon the raptor are destine for that classification as well.....the uav's have raised the bar far beyond all others by doing away with the weakest link.....the physical limits of pilots on board......
A:

35,000 lbs of thrust. Geez. How do you equate that to horsepower.
I guess you could say I am somewhat of an aircraft junkie. I used to spend a lot more time studying it as a boy. I have since gotten busy. But it always fascinated me. I remember the SR-71 was almost an enigma to me...still is. The plane was a little "before" my time. I know it was just a recon jet mainly. But that thing was insanely fast. How long would it take for one to fly around the world, and is that possible?
It seems there has been a decrease in the attention paid to aircraft. I mean, the F-22 is fantastic, but where are the glory days of the SR-71, the F 117, the A10, the A6....

like I said...there' always more:
Powering Boeing's 777 aircraft, the first GE90 engine entered service in November 1995. Since then, the engine family has grown to include several derivative engines and has set a world's record at 127,900 pounds of thrust with its latest engine, the GE90-115B, which entered service in May 2004.

1 lb thrust equals 1 hp at approx. 400 mph. At higher speeds, 1 lb of thrust equals more than 1 hp. I'll post a tech article on this if anyone interested. At cruising speed that means that the F22s combined power of 2 jet engines on full afterburner is putting out more than 100,000 hp. The thing that makes it so bad a$$ is that it only weighs around 31,000 to 38000 lbs, and more depending on how loaded with ordnance I'll have to recheck it's weight as it's been under development for awhile. That is still about twice as much thrust as weight so it will accelerate straight up like a Saturn V rocket. And turn about twice as sharply as an F15!!!
The only aircraft I have flown personally are little 180 Cessnas and the like, but it is still fun. Nothing to brag about other than fun. My brother is a pilot and owned a little cessna.
Yes the unmanned planes are the ones pushing the performance envelope now. I saw a show on the science channel. An aviation engineer was saying that we can build fighters that can pull more than 20 gs in a turn, which looks almost like a 90 degree turn from a distance, but our best pilots in g suits can only take approx. 10 gs and only then for a very short time. They will still have human pilots for some missions for a long time, but yeah I can see the day Unmanned Combat Air Vehicles (UCAV) do the most dangerous missions. Some of them look like UFO since the shape is more versatile when you have no pilot.
My father worked at Lockheed when they were building the now obsolete F104 Star fighter. Called then a "missile with a man in it" - very thin wings. Could hit Mach 2 and fast for it's time, but it's time has long passed, alas.
I would still LOVE to just get a ride in a P51 Mustang!!!. Mostly all I flew in (I was not the pilot) in the AF was C141 cargo jets - the military version of the old Boeing 707. Not sexy as fighters but any flying is fun to me! We flew right through the middle of a very violent thunderstorm one time - civilian commercial pilots are not so crazy and would have flown around it. Hell no not us. right thru the middle. you have NEVER been on roller coaster in you life anything like that. Whew.
I love to fly even the little cessnas. My brother also had an ultra light that flew - i don't know - maybe 50 mph, ha. But it was still fun to buzz around in little more than a lawnchair at 5000 ft, ha. In a strange way, you felt more like you were flying in that thing. More like strapping it on, ha. If you see a storm coming get that thang on the ground. ha . and that right quick.
got to run discuss this more tomorrow. AF got me the old GI bill that allowed me to finish my college degree when I got out so I am thankful!
