A&Q about 350Z
Q:
noticed the absence of an S designation? porsche just announced they're coming out with a lower priced Cayman Coupe. Starting price is 50k, it's coming with 245-hp, 201-lb-ft, flat six-cylinder engine. 0-60 in 5.8, topspeed 160, 17in wheels?
we are just gonna eat these things up. Granted IT IS a porsche and the styling is beautiful and i love porsche's, but c'mon a 15k premium over a very well equiped Z that would dust it(well not dust it, but you know) in proabably every performance category. I mean we all know the Z has a nice leg up on a base boxster but that is a vert while the Z is principally a coupe. Im sure they'll sell though, theres always a middle aged guy looking for a status symbol who proabably doesnt care too much about performance. bahhh, now i'm just ranting.

ehh... pretty nice... i personally just like the carrera 911 turbos... i saw one a few days back... pretty sweet ride.. to my surprise it was dang near flying down the freeway... as most of us have noticed majority of the people that can afford a 50K+ car usually doesn't race them or drive fast...

Quick lane changes and a left turn and I was there scoping it out.
It's a gorgeous machine. Looks smaller than the Z, more of a connected car somehow.
Great lines. Fantastic interior. Lots of Porsche details.
Call me a middle aged whatever, if I had an extra $30k sitting around, I'd pass on the 350Z and go straight to the Cayman.
But I don't have an extra $30k, so the Z is still the perfect car for me.
$9,000 less base starting price for a bit less hp/torque and standard features? Hmmmmmm...... maybe I don't love my Z so much anymore : )

i mean i know it's a beautiful car i've seen an S in person and sat in one, but 15k plus for a car thats slower than our Z's. And yea I understand you could say the same argument about an srt-4 vs our Z's but i think a Z(in well equipped form) is much more comparable to a porsche...i mean leather heated seats, hids, nav if you want. porsche's thing is performance sports cars, i feel like they're getting a bit soft now with their SUV's and 4 door sedans, pshht...ah well, it's a business and whatever helps to sell more units, i guess.

That's much faster than the Z.
Worth the dollars? That's a personal decision. It is indeed a cool car.
A:
Come on the s2000 makes 240hp, puny honda did that. Yeah, it may not have great torque but the way it is delivered negates it on the race track.
The car is a joke unless you want porsche name and handling only for a premium price [50k is still a lot for a sportscar, do I even need to say vette?]

Cayman is nonsense for the price of it one could get a 350Z and a Twin turbo kit along with a fully built engine to handle all the power you need. Only the Cayman S would be worth looking at and then at the price it might come at would just cancel that off.
A:
It's not always about how many horsepower guys, hate to say that, but it's true!
A:
very true, usually i would agree, but not in this case. I havent driven the car so i cant really say how it performs, but you're porsche and you're gonna drop a 50k car into the market, most likely more than that since thats the base price, that does 0-60 in 5.8? Theres sporty sedans for 30k nowadays that can almost run that, and im not talking about the STI or evo. I'm sure the overall driving dynamics of the car are befitting of the price tag but at some point numbers do matter(well to me anyways).

I work part time valet ,i drive a lot of cars this particular porsche seems to be fast at least to me...but again dont know 100% cause i dint take it for a test drive on the road...
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
A:
It's not all about a test stat. The car is gorgeous. It's an "affordable" Porsche. And it's gorgeous.
Did I say it's gorgeous?
Park both in your garage. The Z will have trouble competing.
A:
what do you mean by competing??guality wise? or performance? If your talking about quality wise i agree and i think to most of us in here thats obvious, but performance wise 0-60 in 5.8, topspeed 160 aint all that impressive 72.....
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
A:
According to Porsche, the Cayman S lapped the Nurburgring in 8:20, exactly 5 seconds slower than the Porsche 911. Do you think the 350Z would be within 5 seconds of the 911? Maybe 25 seconds.
The 350Z is a great $30,000 car, but the Cayman (in standard or S trim) is a better sports car. Lighter by a couple hundred pounds (3130 lbs for the Cayman, vs. 3350 lbs for the Z) isn't hurting. Of course, it's $50K, so you have to pay to play. I'm sure Porsche clubs around the world are seeing plenty of Caymans at track days already, though.

cmcniel brings up a good point.. or does he. The car handles great, I won't contest that. Then again, when do you get to go balls-out in corners on the street? Most people don't track their cars around 'the ring' on a regular basis. But I bet everyone here floors their car to redline a few times a day though. For a street car, because that is what it is and will be used for primarily, 50k for its street-suitable qualities is too much IMO. Take into account repair costs, depreciation, insurance.. I'd want more power to back it up. Why can't it push the z's power? If it did, it would be great all around and there wouldn't be much of a point to this discussion.
The cayman is built to a market like every car. But it is just 'too' built for a particular market. It's like the car has so much more potential but they drowned it. Like I said before, if you don't mind paying twice as much [5 year cost will be twice as much, sticker price is only one part of it] for a car that handles and looks good only, go for it.

Im talking Cayman, NOT Cayman S......yes i know it's gorgeous 72, i did say that and i love porsche's. But i really think they're dropping the ball here with this lower priced cayman. I'm a finance guy so business wise i completely understand where they're coming from with this decision and the cayenne and the panamera. But as a car guy i'm kind of dissapointed with the performance numbers(again im a finance guy and numbers work both ways with me). I'm sure the dynamics of the car will be awesome but throw you back in your seat acceleration has to come in to play at some price point. I guess it's valued by some more than others. I'd gladly take a cayman over my Z if they were the same price, i just don't think the premium is worth what you get. And I feel like nowadays, if you're buying a $50k car it's not like you're a millionaire and have all kinds of money to blow. And I dont buy so much the higher quality aspect that somebody mentioned. Even if it is higher quality materials and such that doesn't mean it's going last longer or anything. The repair costs on porsches and other exotics are rediculous. Even if the Z has more problems it'll still cost you less in the repair department.

Not into status symbols. Pretty but has anyone actually sat in one? Z is the one for me.
A:
ive sat in the Cayman S and the cockpit is beautiful like the rest of the car but IMO still not worth the price premium especially in Cayman form where the performance aspect is dropped below the Z

Those of you who have a 350Z and not satisfied, I pity you. Why did you buy it in the first place? If you're driving a Z and daydreaming that it's a Cayman or Cayman S, your brain have lots of problems not the car. I love the 350Z from bumper to bumber and all that comes with it. In NA form it's already an amazing car. So I guess if you want a Cayman, then go buy one. But then again when you have one, another fast and nice car will come out sometime in the future and you'll wish you have that one too. OOHHH, that never ends. So fix the brain and you'll enjoy what you have
A:
My friend have a Cayman, I compared with his car to my roadster. I still think the the 350z is nicer, I mean not as slick but more clean. For that price I rather get a 350z and put in a twin turbo. But then again, that's a Porsche.

I rented one while in Houston, Red Cayman S with the 19 inch rims. What a fun ride is all I got to say. You cant really compare a mid engine car to the Z as far as handling and feel. Nimble is the word that comes to mind after driving the Cayman. Would I pay 70k$ for it?, Prob not. Porsche options list in unbelievable. you can go to their website and build a base S from like 60k to 110k. 50k in options!! Now for the wow factor, driving the Z around I might get 1 or 2 compliments a month. 1 day in the Cayman, girls were wistling at stop lights, I couldnt get gas with out beeing bombarded by 2-3 people every time asking what model it was and what not. Guess that could be attributed to beeing a new model but maybe just cause it looks badd azz. One Crappy crappy thing about the Cayman I drove, TRIPTRONIC. What a joke, annoyed the heck out of me. Very sluggish shifting in my opinion. Need to buy the 6 speed version to really enjoy it. I have videos of the drive on streetfire.net but since Im out at work for another week, I cant access the web page to give yall the link. BEN

Drive fewer miles and you're not driving your Z the way it was "meant" to be driven.
Keep it clean and you're not driving your Z the way it was "meant" to be driven.
Don't hang the tail out at every opportunity and you're not driving your Z the way it was "meant" to be driven.
Don't "drive it like you stole it" and you're not driving your Z the way it was "meant" to be driven.
Be over some double-secret-known-only-to-those-who-feel-there-is-one age threshhold and you couldn't possibly be driving your Z the way it was "meant" to be driven.
Besides all that, I wasn't even talking to you, CantZmee.

obviously it would bother me some or i wouldn't have mentioned it. but honestly, instead of a low end porsche i'd use the 50k for something else.

i guess i can formulate that this porsche was made to give the lower income people a status symbol to drive around... instead of their usual 60-70K cars... either that or for people that just really aren't looking for "racecar" performance
