A&Q about 350Z
Q:
I've owned a 240z and now a 350z. Can someone explain how you get "z33" from "350z"? Or "z32" from (I guess) "300z"? What am I missing? I realize this is a pretty basic question to most of you, but bare with me...

A:
S30 = 240Z, 260Z, 280Z
S130 = 280ZX
Z31 = First gen 300ZX
Z32 = Second gen 300ZX
Z33 = 350Z
It's just a chassis code--a shorthand way of identifying the particular style of chassis. It's like how a 240SX can be an S13 or an S14, depending on the body style.

Here's what I understood it to be....
1st Generation...'70-'78
2nd Generation...'79-'83
3rd Generation...Z-31... '84-'89
4th Generation...Z-32....'90-'96
5th Generation...Z-33....'03-

OK, here's something I've always wondered. Is there any kind of sub-identification nomenclature regarding the early vs. late Z31's?

I usually hang out in the 90-96 Tech forum. But I have to pipe in on this one.
Technically, Z33 is not a chasis code for the 350z.
As for the 70-83 z's I have not looked into the relation of S30 and S130.
However, Z31 chasis code means: Z (car) 3 (3.0 liter) 1 (first generation)
Z32: Z (car) 3 (3.0 liter) 2 (second generation)
I have not seen anything on any 350 Z that says Z33. It is something that was made up in the early media on the car, to appeal to the import crowd and all their "codes".
Best I can tell, the 350 Z would have a code like: Z (car) 35 (3.5 liter) 1 (first generation).
All I know is, it's not a Z33.
(If anyone can find Z33 on any of their identification plates that are in various locations on the car, I'd like to see it.)
