Hehehe, the age old debate. Ive had both. I first tried my Dads 6MT and I loved it, then I tried the 5AT and I ended up getting it. Now I drive my Dads(now mine:)old 6MT. Try both and go with what grabs you the most. If not youll regret for a long time like me. The auto was very nice btw.

every car i've owned up until i bought my Z was a manual. i love them, but was tired of driving one. it's especially annoying because of all the stop and go traffic around here. so i bought an automatic Z. at first i questioned if i made the right decision, but not anymore.
this isn't your mom's automatic. if you slam on the gas it will drop down into the appropriate gear and you'll take off like a rocket. it does it better than most people shift. you also have the option of the manual shifting although it's nothing like a real manual and you can only go up or down one gear at a time.
if i were buying a new Z tomorrow i honestly don't know if i'd buy a manual or automatic. maybe one of each.

I have an '05 Enthusiast AT. I would have preferred the MT but my knee can't take pushing in the clutch any more. Although it's not as much fun as a MT, it's not a bad compromise. I always drive in manual mode. After you get used to the 1 second down shift delay it's not bad.
As far a problems, I have had the same experience as scratchy. When I accelerate hard and shift from 2nd to 3rd sometimes there is a loud bang from the back end and a physical jolt. It only happens when I am accelerating quickly. When accelerating slowly or moderately it doesn't happen at all. I have learned that I can avoid the "bang" even while accelerating quickly by waiting to shift until the engine is on the downside of the power curve (I think that is the right word for it). So I can still push it to the redline and enjoy the full power of the engine without hearing the "bang". Of course the dealer says this is "normal" driveline noise. If I weren't afraid they would mess up something else, I would be more persistant it getting it resolved.

comes down to personal preference, I think either the manual or auto have their benefits.
i live, work and play in a pretty busy city, I don't have any issues with manual. auto would probably be the more sensible option, but i prefer manual - i feel you have more control over the vehicle, especially when slowing down.
daddyg - i would not recommend clutching with your right foot - very dangerous.

I had a 2005 roadster with a auto. I really liked the auto, but always wished for a manual in that type of car. As it turned out my New York skin didn't like the Florida sunshine so I traded it for a 2006 Grand Touring 6 speed coupe. As long as I had to take the hit, I decided that I would get what I wanted in the first place. Now, I'm not too sure that I did the right thing. The manual is a lot of fun, but it's a really busy transmission. I'm constantley shifting the thing. Remember the Z isn't a high torque engine and you have to go higher with the rev's. If you live in a area like Orlando where traffic is really heavy, I wouldn't think twice....... go with the auto.

not much to ad other than my Z32 AT is the same way. Just a big bolt into 2nd. Has gotten better over the years but still does it. Oh yeah, friends 240sx S14 is the exact same way.
