A&Q about 350Z
Q:
Hello all, new to the board and world of Z's and nissan in general. I had a couple of questions I was hoping you guys wouldn't mind helping me with.
I have a 05 350Z with 8000 miles on it and absolutely love it. It came with a 5 year 60k mile extended factory warranty.
What type of performance mods can I add to my Z without voiding my warranty? Things I am considering..Cold air intake, exhaust, light weight wheels and a chip(untracable one obviously).
I know I can get the Nsimo exhaust installed by the dealer with out voiding the warranty but is that the one I have to use? I have been considering a Borla, I hear they sound great and are even lighter than the nismos.
Is a "pop charger" the same thing as a cold air intake? If different, would you guys reccomend one over the other? Can either be installed without voiding the warranty?
A local shop here in Orlando said they can install a chip ( I think it was called a "Unitech" chip). He said it was made by a company out of Australia but I haven't been able to find any info on the Web. He told me that it changed the way the cars computer was programmed and that I would easily be able to change the computer back to the stock setting before being taken to the dealer for maint. or repairs. He said it was untraceable to dealers.
Can anyone reccomend some in-expensive(relatively speaking of course) light wheight wheels?
I know dealers all make those determinations individually so I am just looking for some insight into your guys personal experience.
Thank you in advance for any input that you are willing to provide!!!!!!

Anything you do has to b approved by your dealer if you want to keep the warranty in effect. Now, the exhaust and anything else that the dealer has to install is cool. But, if the factory can attribute your modification to damage that results in a repair bill will not be covered.

It does not have to approved by the dealer.
Realisticly you can do anything you want to your car. But certain things may void the warranty on that particular part. Also if there is a problem the dealer has to prove that the aftermarket part was the cause of the problem. The only problem is the dealer can screw you even if the aftermarket part was not the problem. Be choosy about what parts you pick.

you may want modifications that can easily be reversed, so that if an issue does come up you can revert your car to stock condition when going to the dealer. Obviously for all things it's not really feasible, but it's not a bad idea...

as far as your chip goes, if something went wrong when it was "active", it'll show the difference in timing, fuel trim, etc. when they pull it up on the computer dude. its also easy to tell if someone has been accessing the computer and such,...not so hard to tell if a bolt has been removed and put back in and so forth.

Thanks for the info guys! I made a contact at the local dealer and he has a heavily modified Sentra SER with over 300 hp in it all done by the dealer mechanics.
I made the call dreading what they might say but to my suprise they were very supportive. He told me what mods were ok and it included Intake, Exhaust, Headers, and a Crank Pulley. He even said there was a chip or two out there that they would allow as long as they signed off on the type and how it was calibrated.
He told me two of his long time mechanics would do the work "on the side" so I could avoid outrageous dealer labor cost. and that they would be the ones maintaining and servicing the vehicle.
We haven't gotten into more detail than that, as of yet, but I will let you guys know how it goes down as it may be useful to someone in my area(Orlando)
