>I've read that the 350Z will run just as good on 89 octane
It reduces the engine life slowly due to running more fuel to reduce lean and a few other factors, not just less HP. If you want to keep the car long term, I'd use the recommend fuel.
BMW says you can use 87 in their highest octane engines, but they say only for short periods.

z32d00d,
Please post the location or website of these facts so all of us can read them for ourselves. Right now what you are saying is just looked at as BS and hearsay. I’ve been around a lot of high performance cars for better than 47 years and what you are saying is a new one to me.

$2.78 in Knoxville, TN. There is a gas station here in Knoxville that sell 93 octane at mid-level prices on Fridays.

Well, don't, it's not rocket science and if you understand how the engine compensates for low octane it makes sense. But since you demand proof, here is just one of many articles you can find on it (quote included):
"This typically prevents abnormal combustion and knock, which allows vehicles specified for premium fuel to run on lower-grade gasoline if it is all that’s available. While this removes the immediate hazard, it’s a bad idea to make a habit of running a vehicle on gasoline of lower-than-recommended octane. Retarding the spark causes a richer fuel/air mixture, which decreases fuel economy, increases emissions, causes the engine to run hotter, and reduces the longevity of both the engine itself and the catalytic converter. The money you save by pumping low-grade fuel into a car that demands higher octane is lost anyway, in decreased fuel economy and possibly gradual damage. "
"Cheapskates burning regular in cars designed to run on premium fuel can expect to trim performance by about the same percent they save at the pump."
http://www.baileycar.com/gasoline_html.html
"According to the company, in other Sunoco blends, the lower the octane, the less the protection."
"Most modern cars have knock sensors, which detect pinging, which is often caused by the wrong grade of gas. When the engine pings, the computer retards the spark timing to compensate for the lower octane. That's designed to prevent engine damage if you get a bad tank of gas or travel someplace where the correct octane is unavailable.
Tom: But it's not a good idea to run your car with retarded timing over the long run. Among other things, you'll force the engine to run hotter than it's supposed to run, which will shorten its life. And you'll force it to run rich, which can eventually ruin your catalytic converter. "

........."burning regular in cars designed to run on premium fuel can expect to trim performance by about the same percent they save at the pump. If the car is sufficiently new and sophisticated, it may not suffer any ill effects"...............
and I still get 32mpg highway with the cruise set at 65mph.

Right, it "may not" depending on how often the det sensor is backing it off and what the gas is like. Short term it is doubtful to cause a problem (as said before). If you have no problem running your engine rich and hitting the det sensor often, then do it long term.
Besides, I'm sure Nissan is just trying to scam you into buying more expensive gas by telling you to run premium because they are clearly in cohorts with Exxon Mobile. Heck, you can save some money by running 5w50 blend in your engine too, since you can get it cheap at Costco and the like. The 5w30 is just a recommendation! Who cares, right?

Yeah, b*llsh*t. I'm sure you are.
