A&Q about 350Z
Q:

My friend wants to race. What are my chances of beating him?
What mods should I do next to get more power?

STI should smoke you 0-60 mph by about 0.5s or more.
Mods? Turbo.

First of all where is this race gonna take place on a track? or back roads i can say for sure the sti is faster, but the z handles better,i think you can beat him depends on the driver too.As for your next mod i would consider a kenetix plenum...or some headers.

As posted above the regular WRX for 06 got the 2.5 engine that is now rated at 230hp, not 227. However it's under-rated from the factory. It puts down over 30hp more than the 2.0 engine of the older version and over 30lbs more torque. Basically it's equivalent to having ~250hp at the crank and not 230hp. It's more than capable of keeping up with the 350z, so don't disscount the WRX.
As for the ugly comments, a lot of people don't think to highly of the 350z either.

Subaru tends to underrate their power numbers, don't know why. The Forester XT ran a 5.3 second 0-60 for Car and Driver and Motor Trend, with a listed 215 bhp for its first model year. For comparison, the best time for the 350Z that I've seen was 5.3 seconds in Car and Driver, with 287 bhp. Hmm.....

i thought about getting an sti when i bought my Z, but like many have said, the sti is ugly and if i want to go faster i can, and probably will, put a turbo on my z.

When you are comparing rwd and awd cars you never know how it will end.
Awd cars are "usually" a lot slower on top end when compared to a rwd car that runs the same 1/4 time. And fwd cars have the best top end of all of them, assuming they run the same 1/4 time. Its all about the launch and the drivetrain loss. Rwd is the best of everything for drag racing. As pointed out awd cars break when launched hard. Nothing slips, nothing gets rid of stress. Thus rwd is better. All you need is a pair of slicks and the rwd will grab good enough that the better top end makes up for it. As for stop light races, awd all the way. Highway races, rwd all the way.
I drove a 350z and a g35 and both were slower than a 90 fwd eclipse running 14psi and maybe a low 14 if lucky. The handling of the z was good though. And the z got up to speed better because it gripped. But if you got on em at any real speed the eclipse would walk it. Its just math. I didnt like the z because it was too stiff for a old wiplash injury. The g35 though, mmmm nice car :D
My money is on the wrx from a stop. And maybe from a roll too. Depends how hard he launches it. Launch them like a normal rwd car and itll loose like .8 seconds in the 1/4. Or around 3-5 car lenths.
He has you by at least 30hp because of weight. But his car will also loose more in the drivetrain. You never know with that stuff, just race and see. I've been finding out lately a lot of cars that put down good 1/4 times arnt always fast on the street. Most 350z's at the strip run mid 14's. Most sti's run low 13's.

Tubo / non turbo comparisons are like comparing grapes and coffe mugs.
