2003 350Z issues

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Hi Team:
I currently have a 1990 300zx TwinTurbo and am considering buying a 2003 350Z...Can someone list and explain the 2003 issues to me or should I just plain stay away from an 03...?

seems there have been a lot of threads with this same subject. 03's could be issues free if you get the right one. the problem is you'll never know until you actually buy it.

Midlife:
Like I have tried explaining it before, all cars no matter what year are going to have problems/issues. There is no 'PERFECT' car, no matter the price. These cars are mass produced to make a profit, therefore they are not over-engineered, they're produced to be a money making machines...and as all machines things break down.
Now getting back to the subject of the 350Z, I own a pre-order Z and I had the same issues:
Window Streaks: Fixed On Both Windows
Seat Fabric Fraying: Fixed on Both Seats with the '04 thicker material
Tire Feathering: Fixed and aligned once...I currently have over 40,000 miles and I'm on my second set of tires, so I have no complaints. Sure others had their problem Z's, I'm sure they were out there and if I needed to get tired every 6,000 or 7,000 miles I would be upset too but like the old saying goes, 'the squeaky wheels gets the oil'...so those that have had problems have been way way more vocal than us who didn't have nearly as many issues. For example, you'll find TONS of thread about people bitching and moaning (rightfully so in some cases but some have that idea of a perfect car...but they'll never find it) but when would you post a thread about you not having any problems...never. So while I think you'll have a huge proportion of 03 350Z's that absolutely love thier cars with no or little problems, you won't hear about them because it's just more likely that upset people will and have posted. And don't believe that this was only an 03 issues...as you'll find this affected 04's, and 05's. Not sure of 06's as I believe they got front suspension changes.
If you want to assure yourself that you have avoided this...then I suggest getting a 06 so you will have the dealer warranty to help you out with your concerns.

the big difference between recalls on every other car and the issue with the 350z tire feathering is that the others can be fixed and the feathering can't in some cases.

Actually junstinhenry if that was true, then there would be absolutely no need for a 'lemon law'...so the problems some 350Z's have are no different than any other issues other cars have. If they can't be fixed no matter what car brand or model, that's what that law if for.

I must drive like a grandpa compared to most of you.....hehe
Actually, I don't feel like I drove in any way very hard, that I know. I don't spin the tires - it's just not something I do, and I don't particularly take corners squealing the tires either. I've just not heard of anyone getting 50K out of the OEM's before....
Believe only what you think, not what you feel.
A:

bluztrk, do you drive over 10mph? sheeeesh, that's a lot of miles on those low tread tires. even under normal driving conditions they should wear out a long time before that. unless of course the last 30k were spent driving on bald tires.

I've had my Z since Jan 2003 and besides the tire feathering issue, covered under warranty, my only other problem was the security LED light going out. That was also covered by the warranty.
I had a the manual tranny issue (grinding between 2nd and 3rd, 5th and 6th) for a very short period of time, but that eventually went away and I didn't have to replace it.
I also experienced the gas tank filling issue (turning the nozzle upside down to keep from inadvertently stopping), but that also went away after a short period of time.
I could care less about the window streaks. I don't even notice them anymore, except for when someone mentions it.
Other than that, I wouldn't trade my Z for anything. I've had an offer to get a new BMW, but I declined.

Here is a great fix for the window streaks, without the dealer taking the doors apart. If you tape a thin piece of absorbent paper (not the type that falls apart easily), onto the window so that it covers the area of streaking, just roll the window up and down for a while. The absorbent material will remove most of the grease residue that remains inside the door mechanism. Then remove the tape and absorbent material. I have heard this method used before. I cannot recommend the actual magterial, but it would have to be around the same thickness as a business card with aborbent qualities. Just a suggestion. Any thoughts?

I have a Nov. 2002 build 350Z. Only problems I have experienced were the window grease streaks (fixed by dealer under warranty), SLIGHT tire wear fixed by dealer alignment (no further tire issues) and ECU re-flash per Nissan TSB (done by dealer).
I also just got the car back from the fuel filler tube repair. This was a Nissan RECALL (not TSB) for '03 and '04 models.
These were issues that I feel Nissan addressed adequately. The car is still the best sportscar bang for the buck.
my 2 centz!
