A&Q about 350Z
Q:
So i started up my car today around 1pm, and it starts up normally, but after a couple of minutes i notice that the needle on the rev gauge was fluctuating quite abnormally. It would go up to 1500 then suddenly drop close to stalling then go back up to 1500 then go down to 1000. While driving, it would drop 500 rpm (I'd be driving at 3000, then suddenly fall to 2500 but would quickly go back up.) and it would cause the car to jerk a little. I've installed a CAI and recently got the recall done, but that's pretty much it. Any reasons and suggestions on how to get it fixed? I was thinking that my car was acting this way because of a cold start.

i'm not sure what your mileage is etc.. i'm almost certain there is a TSB for this. a while back i had a idle scenario and the dealer replaced the tps and housing under warranty.

My warranty is done. Any other ideas?

check the TSB's, if there is one the delaer should fix for free under it. i'm almost certain there was one. what year is your car?

Well BLUTRK & PerfZ, I agree with you too. But the main purpose of the MAF is to calculate how much fuel to deliver to the cylinders, so even if the MAF is the problem the actual result would be improper dosage of fuel. The vacuum and intake system are very important parts of anyfuel injection system, since computers are very precisely tuned to deliver the appropriate amount of fuel based on many parameters.
In order to run properly, the computer must know all of the following: Mass air volume, air temperature, engine temperature, fuel temperature, throttle position, engine rotation speed, and O2 readings from exhaust gases. If any of these sensors or devices is malfunctioning or producing false readings from loose/broken connectors, vacuum leaks, or other causes, then the net result will be improper fuel.
Based on the limited data we have currently about the problem, I'm leaning towards MAF as well. But also, based on the somewhat intermittant nature of the problem, it could also very easily be a loose electrical connector to any of the various sensors needed to properly calculate fuel mixture. I still say that more information is needed to come up with a more precise diagnosis. Anything at this point is purely speculation.

I have a manual 2003 Z. Whenever i slam on the gas it isn't smooth but it does exhibit the same jerky feeling. Even while I'm slowly pushing on the accelerator the car would jerk. However, now it doesn't do the weird idle nor does it jerk.
I don't think that the MAF sensor is malfunctioning.
It happened while accelerating, i was probably in 2nd or 3rd when it happened.
While cruising, it doesn't show the same idle.
When I tried the fan, it didn't get warmer.
I'll try checking the CAI again when the weather becomes favorable.

Does your idle sound like this?
A:
If it is suddenly cured, you can almost bet that your problem is a loose electrical connector on some important sensor. I highly suggest you carefully check the wiring around the engine, most especially near where the CAI tube was installed.

Did you check the gas cap? If it isn't closed tight enough, the check engine light will come on. If that doesn't solve the problem, i say bring it in.
