Why do they even try?

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

The last two nights in a row I have been casually driving my 350z and people have tried to race me. The first night I pulled out onto a 2 lane highway and was driving alone for a while when a Sentra Spec-V started tailgating me and swerving over like he wanted to pull up next to me and race. After a minute or so I decided What the hell? and stepped on it. I got to 120mph in no time and he tried keeping up but was pretty far behind. I slowed down cause I knew a stop light was coming up. He pulled behind me at the light and started reving his engine so I punched it again beating him fairly well off the line and then pulling further away in the higher gears. The guy followed me into town and when we got to a 4 lane road he sped up to pull along side me. Once he got close I slammed the breaks and cut in right behind him tailgating him to the next stoplight. This time I reved my engine tempting him and as the light turned green he took off as I made a nice and slow right turn onto another road. I could have kept lighting him up all night but he just wasn't getting it. The next night a guy in a stock Scion tC got right behind me on the highway and pissed me off. I slowed down to let him pass and when he did he cut me off. After flashing my brights and laying on the horn for a while he decided to floor it and so I did the same. I stayed right behind him till about 110mph and when the right lane was clear I moved over and held down the gas till the speedometer said 135mph and he was about 7 or 8 car lengths behind. Sometimes I just don't get why people try to race faster cars. I wouldn't try to race a Viper or Corvette. Just venting.
Also, just wondering what the fastest some people have got their Z's up to? Mine stops at 148mph, tried it 3 times now.
A:

Those are the drivers I stay away from. On the southside of chicago I seem to run into a large group who think the 2 door Chevy Caviler (now the cobalt) is a sports cars cause its small and has 2 doors. I pull over to the right cause I dont want to be close when they realize their suspension can really handle that turn (and especially considering all of our potholes).

BTW: I have had the car over a year and never went over 121mph but it felt like I had plenty of room to accelerate.
A:

why? Because sometimes it's fun to test your car out against others, even if they are faster. there is more to racing than just winning. Sometimes it's just about the fun. Although winning is fun too

150+ MPH. This was on an empty straight portion of the interstate with no cars around.
A:

i wouldnt indulge them if i were you, well unless you like street racing. All you need is to get caught by a cop and you'll be kicking yourself for letting that car goad you into it. But i can see where people come from trying to "race" faster cars. Sometimes you just want to see what the car can do. Its a bit different with a Z and say a sentra or a TC since Z's a re fairly common, but I know when i come across exotics i like to get a closer look, but i certainly dont tailgate or try and race them. I came across a Viper-GTS once on the highway that was doing some "spirited" driving and caught up to the guy and just gave him a thumbs up. He gave a salute back and gunned it, caught up to him again and he let me pass ahead of him and then he flew by me but gave another acknowledgment, i did the same. A little fun and mutual respect is always nice, theres no place for tailgating and cutting people off though, i cant stand those people.
As far as top speed ive been up to 142 and felt safe, it was on a very desolate 2 lane road, but didnt push it all the way. I couldnt help but think that if i blew a tire id be dead.

Racing on highways is absolutely CRAZY!
My SB ZR still feels like HEAVEN....what a wild ride!

it is totally ur choice, but at ur own risk, u will always get tossers that want to challenge u, but first u have to consider ur own safety, then there's the risk of injuring others + the wear on ur car.

A:

Actually, if he achieved his top speed in 1974, he has to be at least 48.
Not that I have too, but I call bullsh!t.

Ill assume you are being sarcastic but if you arent...
You may be the "ultimate skilled driver" but i dont think the person you are racing or the other people are around you are as "skilled" as you are. An accident can happen anytime without any warning.

Although it is annoying as hell it isn't worth the risk of messing with them on public roads. I had this guy in a Chrysler Crossfire messing with me yesterday. I wanted so bad to blow his doors off, but ultimately thought better of it and just ignored him. He finally sped off. I say let him get a ticket not me.

WTF does age have to do with it? Why have all of that power if you are not going to apply it? Buy a Honda civic!
A:

Gundog, it's really not my intention to be holier-than-thou. I have done a lot of stupid things on public roads. I totally know how easy it is to be goaded into showing off or teaching some punk a lesson.
BUT, are you seriously weaving through traffic and tailgating people? I think I've finally learned that the behavior you described in your post is STUPID and dangerous not just to you but everyone else, including the idiot who thinks his ricemobile is better than your Z.
I hope you learn that discretion is the better part of valor.
Again, to prove I'm not trying to be too sanctimonious, I'll admit that I've hit 135 on empty desert interstate. Could've gone faster, but I could see cars coming up in front of me, and I didn't want to risk others' lives.

I agree about it being tempting - I've been lucky to not get a ticket considering my somehwhat blatant disregard for many posted speed limits. With that said, you DID say you tailgated the other driver which is kind of asking for trouble. And at 148, you are moving at over 200 feet a second - doesn;t matter how fast your brother thought you were going, its the fact that if something happens 400 feet down the road, you are going to be in it in 2 seconds. Just something to keep in mind :-). And if your engine blows, keep in mind you have ZERO torque to help keep you on the road.
A:

Why would a well maintained, low mileage VQ motor blow? What if the sky fell, we would all be CRUSHED.
A:

Fastest I went was 304 km/h in a Lambo.
I dont think I would feel safe going 150mph in a Z though!
I usually drive 70-90mph with the Z and went 110mph at most.

1969 datsun 2000 with racing cams, bored out, polished, Twin Mikuni high performance carbs. Flew like at bat out of hell, ate every muscle car that tried it, caused two to blow a motor. 200 mph speedometer that was accurate.
A:

sounds like road rage to me. why not just slow down and pull over, and let the idiot pass. you both get tickets when you get caught and its not proving anything it takes two to tango be the bigger man and just let the idiot by.
as for the worlds fastest srl311 i guess he was teaching brock and those guys all the tricks in that little tub.
this is a bit ridiculous, from more than one angle.
A:

To overcome the aerodynamic drag at 182 mph, the car would have to be making in the ballpark of 420 wheel horsepower, assuming a favorable coefficient of drag.

Oh yeah did i mention the fact the he was proabably only 16
Keep it real and stay true to yourself!
A:

Let off the gas at 182 mph beacause the car felt it was going to go airborne because of the lift, very exilirating, but scary at the same time. Done on a lon staright strip of unopened highway. 420 hp is not necessary for a car that weighs 1582 pounds. Aero is not that big of a deal since such a small area. When 2000's ran at Summit point in Pa., they would ALWAYS finish 1 and 2, nothing could touch them. It beat every generation of Z that followed it.

I can't change what I've done. But I can learn from it and try to help others. The 100 hours is based on the fact I used to drive to the westside of houston on the beltway cruising at about 100 for the 20-30 min drive each way, at least 3 times a week, for a few years. Just a rough estimate, 10k miles seems to high, maybe I was off some.
And I wasn't lecturing YOU anymore so than I was trying give advice to anyone willing to listen. I think the guy who commits the crime can tell you if it's worth it or not moreso than the guy who hasn't, JMO.
I was lucky and never wrecked, but the road was empty late at night on an elevated tollway I know very well. Wasn't switching lanes or doing goofy stuff either, had good tires, proper tire pressure, etc. as well, for what that's worth.
Then again, the story above was when a friend spun out on the highway going about 80 in a 65, just after going over a small hill. Another friend went over the top of the hill going 85-90 and didn't have time to react. Ended up going airborne on his side and landing on the hood of my car while I was just cruising at 70 in the slow lane. So I've seen both sides.. the guy speeding.. the guy getting his car crushed from a flying benz.
Just stay safe you seem to know what you are doing, I was just saying what I said generally speaking, not directed at you.

There's no way in hell you had a Roadster 2000 up to 182mph and "felt more." In fact, there's no way in hell you had a Roadster 2000 up to 182mph. Please show me the Bonneville records as I believe you're the one holding them if you actually achieved that speed. I think the record for a first gen Z is about 177mph (with severe aero mods) and I wish TonyD was here to slam you for posting BS like this.

Mnelson,
I did not run at Bonneville. The 2000 cc motor was .038 overbored, polished, and blueprinted, datsun high performance alumininum pistons with special heads, racing camshafts, 8 quart oil sump, twin high velocicity mickuni carbs, polished racing headers, no anti smog, 3" pipes with a flow through mufler. I have to justify notning to you. I know and felt the facts. The car was is a high velocity rocket, tuned to the max by an ace mechanic. I wish I still still had this car and I would gladly demonstrate. It was sold recently for $28,000. People that only know the handle SRL311, show thier ignorance by not understanding the true meaning of the handle and the historical signifigance.
A:

I agree, pure unadulterated BS. To make the comment "420 hp is not necessary for a car that weighs 1582 pounds. Aero is not that big of a deal since such a small area" you prove that you have NO IDEA what you are talking about. Total BS, you're a liar, end of story. Sheesh.

Oh well, I guess EVERY model Z that tried me lost BIG time. Never beat by a 1969.5 or later model Z. Never ran at Bonneville, and certainly did not need aero bits to reach the frightening speed. Tuning on the Mikunis did a World of difference. Their is no BS, and this car wss built for racing. Ate the turbo Z's for breakfast. The Z you show at the link is a POS compared to the 2000. I wish I still owned it, I would own many titles. I did win $250.00 fom a guy in a chevelle SS 396 who could only say holy s**t!!, what do you have in there?
A:

Just shut your stinkin' filthy lyin' mouth already!~ You clutter up the forums with exactly what cmcniel said "pure unadulterated BS." How old are you, 14?
