when at the dealership

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

greetings all. in 2 weeks i'm picking up my new z. i have read that i should test drive the new car (just in from japan) with the dealers plates on it. that way i haven't taken actual delivery, and can see if there are any problems. i never knew this could occur. does anyone know if this is true, or have experience with this? thanks.

most places make you test drive before you buy. with a new car you don't really have to worry about problems. if there are any it's obviously under warranty so they'll fix it.

Boy, I can tell you're new at buying new cars. I've had more than one nightmare. I've seen driver seats mounted at a angle, engine problems, several cars with vibrations ( I was the first person in New York to use the lemon law because of that problem ). Thank God we have a lemon law. I still remember the days of bringing your car in a dozen times for the same problem. Do yourself a favor and test drive the car.
One more thing, get down on your hands and knees and check every inch of the paint. I bought a 2004 350Z from a dealer in Leesburg Florida and found out at the first wash that it had acid rain damage. The dealer wanted to re-paint the clear coat.......NOT! So I traded the car on a new 2005 Z Roadster, just to get it home and find the piece under the radiator opening was all gouged out from being driven over a concrete parking lot stop. I had to beg the guy to let my own paint shop fix it, only to find out that someone had also tried to pry the front Nissan medallion off the car. The dealer accused me of having that done on my watch and I had to pay for it. I was so mad that I've only been back once because the top was coming apart at the seams. The dealer jobbed it out and when I got the car home I found a nice new dent in the drivers door. As of yet I haven't heard a word from the dealer and I paid for the repair myself.......again!

thanks for the input all. i drive my cars for many years before getting a new one, so i guess that does make me "new to the game". i'm taking a friend with who does body work for a living. sorry for all your problems drumline- hope i dont have anywhere near a similar fate.

Try not to be too much of a pain in the ass, or strange dents will continue to appear in your car. Remember that not every single car will be a model of perfection. If you plan on showing your car at the Z meets or other car shows, then feel free to scrutinize. But if it has some minor defects, instead of demanding that they be fixed, try to get the dealer to knock off a few hundred or thousand. I realize that we all want a perfect Z, and i'm sure that they do exist. Just dont be an ass at the dealership and avoid the "mystery dents".

Another thing to think about is when you get it serviced, especially at the dealers: Don't let them "clean" the car after service. The guys in the detail shops, for the most part, don't give a damn about the cars they work on. Ask any dealer about the hardest department to keep staff in....
That's where those new scratches and dings almost always come from. Every time any of my past Zs have gone in somebody elses hands - I get a nice mark to remind me of the event.
