A&Q about 350Z
Q:
I had the dealer change the oil that I brought in. Mobil1 10W30, 5 quart container.
Had the dealer oil in there before. Was Pennzoil. Viscosity I don't know what they had.
Now I wonder if the guy kept my good oil and used something else.
After standing for only about 4 hours in the garage I get that rattle from the cam drive on start-up.
Anybody had that?
A:
Holly crap man, don't go to that dealer again. What year is your 350Z by the way?
A:
The recommended oil viscosity for your Z is 5W-40. If they used the oil you brought in (10W30), that rattle could be because of the thicker oil taking longer to circulate (particularly with cold weather).
A:
That's all I got on this one.
Except check your oil level. It may be low.

ENNO:
what do you mean a rattle from the camdrive? I could imagine a ticking noise or a clicking noise but rattles are ususally loose heat shields or exhaust leaks or something like that.

A:
Hey Dkmura, it's 5w-30 not 5w-40.
A:
precisely why i do my oil changes myself... i can't trust anyone in a service shop... they have a tendency to do a half ass job

I don't think, I know...
Well, I don't think you know either

rattle is like a "Brrrrt" and is very short in duration.

So you get the noise when you first start up the car, and then what? Does this rattle noise happen only momentarily, does it persist as the car idles, does it go away when warm, etc.. When trying to solve these mysterious new noise problems, the little details really help so be as specific as possible. Right now I'm kinda thinking the noise as you described it could be an exhaust leak or a heatshield rattling. Exhaust leaks, when they happens somewhere between the cat and the exaust manifolds, can make this annoying chirping noise. If you have the stock exhaust system I would inspect all of the pipe connections between the manifolds and the cat. especially look at those sections that they obviously would have to remove in order to get the tranny out.
If you really feel that the noise is a mechanical sound, you really need to go to Ace hardware and invest a few dollars in a 4-foot long section of thick rubber garden line hose. I'm talking about that thick, flexible, black hose with an outside diameter of 1". Then when you get home, you pop the hood, start the car, and start poking around the engine.
You put one end of the hose to your ear, you move the other end around your engine, putting it agianst various surfaces to listen for the object that is creating the noise you are hearing. If you suspect a cam shaft, poke the tube around your heads and listen. You'll be amazed how easily you will be able to isolate specific objects making noises. As my engine keeps racking up miles, the $6 i spent on hose has saved me thousands of dollars in I would have spent paying a mechanic to diagnose the millions of problems I've had in the past couple years.
