so treat them like any other painted surface, albeit one that gets REALLY abused by brake dust. Regular soap and water washings, apply your favorite wax/polish, and they'll be super spiffy.
The stock 18s allow me to reach inside to wash the entire wheel. Your 17s look like they would require periodic removal to get them 100% clean.
I don't bother cleaning exhaust pipes, but the chrome tips get the soap and water treatment with every car wash. When cleaning is needed, I use wadding polish. Then an occasional touch up, sometimes with mild rubbing compound sometimes with the wadding, and they stay super spiffy just like the wheels.

To get tar and other tough road grime off of wheel I use lighter fluid. The tpye you use to light the BBQ. It's a mild enough solvent to clean yet it won't damage clear coating etc.. Just for safety sake wash it with soap and water afterwords.
I use a product call Crystal Guard on my car and wheels and love it. However, Zaino does a great job as well it just take a little longer and doesn't harden the base materials for protection as the Crystal Guard does.
The best is to Crystal Guard the car then Zaino over it all. Best hardness and combo of shine with depth. ;)

We'll decided to shine up the wheels today after seeing this thread.
I cleaned them with soap and water.
polished out the light scratches I had.
I applied another coat of crystal guard.
Tomorrow I thing I'll apply a coat of Zaino to see up I can bring even more depth to it.
Here is some pictures of how it looks so far:
Not too bad for '04 Base Wheels. However, I am looking forward to getting these someday:
