Question re HKS exhaust ...

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

I'm not in the market for this thing, but I'm curious about something: what function is served by the the smaller canister-type things that are hooked to the main mufflers? I can't figure them out, and can't see how a one-way pipe running into the "dual muffler canister" can be good for exhaust flow.

those canisters hold the air freshener. when the exhaust comes out it mixes together to create a fresh scent from your tailpipe. duh.

I think its a sort of resonator or sound dampener.

I'm not alone, then. Thanks.

Thanks for the confidence in the product, though.

I'm with justinhenry on the air freshener thing. Need to patent that idea.

Those are resonance chambers. They are affixed to the HKS systems and designed to control exhaust noise - yet still allow increased performance.
A:

I've never seen one-way dead-end gizmos like that. Resonance chambers - kind of like blowing air across the opening of an empty bottle.
A:

Right, that makes sense. The size of the bottle could determine the pitch and depth of the tone. There would be a cost in terms of flow with such a device though. Just bolt on straight pipes.. none of this fancy stuff. Power is power, even if it sounds like a beer can. (assuming FI system here)

if that's the case then it should come with various sizes so you can choose your favorite sound.

Make your own sound. Duh.

Actually, the size of the pipes can determine the sound.
