A&Q about 350Z
Q:
It's been a while since I've been on but today I got a check from Nissan for my 03-Z. Price was for my purchased price minus the milege I put on it since Sept. of 02. I hate to get rid of it but do not want the hassle of buying new tires every 10k miles. Basically what happenned was I had my tires comp'ed twice and the last time (3rd time) they refused comp even after they come out with the latest bulletin to extend the warrantee. They state that it wasn't the same size/type tire that came with the car. Why would I purchase the same tires that wear out with my own money.
To make a long story short. I got a lemon lawyer and he nogotiate for the buy back of my car. I'll be happy to post his number if anyone's interested.
For those of you who want to keep the Z even with the tire problem ...more power to you. I just had enough.
I might buy a convertible Z if I knew for sure they fixed the tire alignment problem.
A:
that's why you should never buy a car the first year it comes out.

You easily could have fixed it yourself with a $50 alignment and maybe some decent tires, but hey... whatever pleases you.

He could have fixed it with $2000 in adjustable front suspension parts, an alignment and a new set of tires.
That might be worth it. Not sure.

Well I dunno man... I adjusted the toe-in myself on my moms G35 and it solved the problem. 25,000 miles so far on the Kumho tires she last put on and no issues. It used to kill tires in 7000 miles before.
A buddy of mine with a Z33 told me to do it and he's had no problems since he changed his toe-in on his '03 Z..
Have any of you guys actually tried it?

Lot of history phx31... the Z33 is no G35. Different weight distribution and wheel base.
After 5 front end alignments... 2 by Nissan's "magic numbers" and 3 by a local performance shop, I finally am at 13k on a set of front tires.
The local performance shop services high end sports cars and have seen it all.
At four sets of front tires at 33,400 miles and exactly 3 years of ownership as of today I finally have a comfortable solution NO thanks to Nissan of North America!!!
What helped this problem for me was to replace the Potenza's with a higher wear rated tire and rotate the front tires side to side every 6 to 10k miles.
There is not a one time "$50 adjustment" that solves this problem.
Cheers

Some got hosed with that problem. I got over 25K miles on my stock tires before I had to change them out. I'm nearing 40K miles on the second set, but I did buy them used so they are almost gone. So far I'm pretty happy with the kind of milage out of a soft compound tire but I'd like to get more...so I'm planning on getting Michelin Pilots to replace these Potenzas.

I don't know, but mine I still have the original front tires with an aftermarket wheels. I'm waiting for it to wear out so I can replace it with a thicker 245 for my front. I got Over 10k on my front original potenza and I'm getting impatient now on replacing it. So far I think It's still good to go another 5 to 7k before I can replace it.

PD, not saying it's always the case, but if i'm gonna drop that kind of money on something i'd rather be safe than sorry.

PD? Hmm, are you a Police Officer, if you are? Do you know anything about Quixtar?
A:
About that first year of production. I was always a bit concerned about that too...but in 1989 I bought a new Maxima. Most trouble free car I have ever owned...which caused me to not hesitate to buy a 1990 300ZX NA. Again, another trouble free vehicle. My confidence in Nissan soared and more recently I popped for the new model 2002 Infiniti Q45 as soon as it appeared. Major mistake. One of the worst cars I have ever owned. So maybe that fear of buying first years production runs is right afterall and / or the Nissans of old were put together better than average.

My tires had the uneven wear and made the noises at 7,500 miles. I got the free replacement tires with the new tread and the dealer aligned with the TSB specs. I have had no problems at all since then and now have 20,000 miles on the front replacement tires. I also have the original factory 17" wheels. Now with the low tread wear rating on our stock tires, I figure the most we can get out of the tires anyway is about 25,000 miles at best. If you drive aggressively at all. So I consider my problem totally cured.
I'd say my replacemnt front tires have a bit more wear left in them and I'll probably replace this spring at about 25,000 miles on the front tires.
I don't know, I have heard that some of the early 350Zs got tied down too tightly on the boat over here from Japan and may have bent things in the suspension. I have heard that other things may have happened. So I am not dicounting that some 350Zs may have continuing problems with this. But I am very satisfied with my own experience and love my 350Z more every day. It is just a very good all around performance car for the money. Or maybe it's that it just feels right for me.
