Every once in awhile on my new Z '06, I can hear what sounds like sticky lifters or something knocking in the engine while Im accelerating, and only when Im accelerating.
Is this knocking sound indigenous to this engine, or should I have that checked out?

Have it checked not. My buddy use to have an old pathfinder, had that same knocking sound under acceleration. He sold it before he fixed it, so sorry cant tell you what was wrong. Maybe some one has better knowledge than me. BEN

Doesn't sound like knocking to me, that sounds more like an engine under stress. When you mean it happens when youre accelerating, what are you RPMs at? Putting the car at full throttle in a low gear when the RPMs are low can really put stress on the engine.
For example: you're at 45-50 MPH and youre in 6th gear. If you're trying to accelerate under such conditions, you're really bogging the engine down and stressing it out, and it will make noises.
If the noise suddenly goes away once the RPMs get to a certain point, or you don't experience such noise when you downshift before accelerating, then the car is behaving normally. Most people don't realize that 6 cylinder engines really like to be revved high when accelerating. If you're RPMs are below 3-3.5k when you're accelerating, you're really in the wrong gear. You'll notice it will even take much less foot on the throttle to accelerate under these conditions.
--That being said--
If you really think the engine is knocking, listen for a quick "rat tat tat tat tat tat tat" sound when accelerating. If it is knocking, it will happen when the engine is under load or accelerating. Try to imagine this sound: A deck of brand new, crisp playing cards (poker cards) rattling around in an empty metal coffee can. Thats kinda what knocking or pinging sounds like.

Rather presumptuous response - doesn't sound like it is a pinging
(detonation) problem and no mention is made of octane used. Think
phxZ31 may have the right idea.

As for the "other" replies regarding premium... thanks for pointing out the obvious. and if you care, yes I have been using premium from day 1, which basically displays your lack of knowledge, and your unjustified judgement and false conclusions. :)

I have an 03 and my Z was knocking under hard acceleration. It turned out to be a broken engine mount "believe it or not" Or was it an engine mount with no bolt. It was one of those two. The car at the time was only a few months old at the time
Under hard acceleration the engine would hit or tap the strut bar causing a mysterious knocking sound.
