A&Q about 350Z
Q:
I read something on my350z.com that sounds like an interesting topic to discuss, what are the performance differences between the models ? From what I read, it seems like the Base model has the highest performance in both acceleration and cornering... what do you guys think ? and does anyone know exactly the weight difference between the top of the line Track and Base ? Any actual comparison on scale or race track ?

those are 06 specs obviously and they put on a few pounds comapred to the earlier models. the 03's atleast were closer to 3200-3300lbs. I have seen base models put up a bit better #'s but its pretty much negligible. obviously things like power seats and other mechanical options adds weight but its not gonna be a huge difference. theres ways to take out weight from any model that would negate the less than 100lb difference of a base. wheels, exhaust, battery, spare+tools+mats+, etc etc.

i've read a lot of articles, looked at a lot of specs, and seen a lot of videos about the Z and other cars, but to regurgitate it here would be too much work. as you mentioned the best place to find this information is directly from the nissan website. there are also videos out there where they've modded various trims of 350z and compared them. to get a good understanding you have to do your own research.

The 18" Ray wheels on the Track model weigh far less than the standard 17" wheels on the Base. If someone was to go to lighter wheels on the Base the weight difference would be much greater. Just a thought. 50Lbs is something anyway. Once again I have never seen any performace data in the magazines for the 03 Base. They only tested the highly equiped models.

At the weights we are talking about, 50lbs up to 150lbs difference, the weight of the driver and amount of fuel in the tank has an impact on the handling of the car. Thats why there are no performance numbers on the base vs. Touring. They would be so close, that any differance at all could be chalked up to any number of factors. But if you wanted to split hairs, with the same driver, same fuel load, same amount of windshield wiper fluid the results would probably be this:
Base Model would have the fastest 0-60 and quarter miles times because its lighter.
The Track Model would have better slalom, track, and cornering ability because of the lighter rims (which allow for the suspension to react quicker) and the wider tires.
BTW this assumes the engine output is exactly the same. Production vehicles can vary up to 10 HP from car to car. I agree with Zoldman that Torque is king.
