A&Q about 350Z
Q:
Hi,
I 'm getting my 2003 350Z Touring serviced at 42000km and they've just called me to tell me the rear tyres need replacing. I'm in Australia and the Touring has 17" wheels.
The Nissan dealer doesn't stock the Bridgestone standard tyres and offered to replace with Goodyear.
Question 1: should I have the Nissan dealer replace my tyres or go to a tyre shop?
Question 2: Should I take the Goodyears or is there a better option - I drive about 15000km's per year on the shitty Aussie roads. I don't drive the car very hard.
Appreciate some informed advice!

G'Day Mate,
A tire is not just a tire. What Goodyear model? Here in the States, we have an aftermarket tire and wheel distributor called The Tire Rack. They have a superb web site with loads of test data. I would recommend that you plug into their web site - www.TireRack.com - and scope out your options.
If you have an idea of what tire meets your driving style the best, then you can see what the relative price is. After that is complete, you can check out your own local tire dealers. My guess is that your Nissan dealer will jam you pretty good with his mark-up.
The other thing to keep in mind is how many tires you replace. If you're not replacing the rears with the same Bridgestones, you really should replace all four because different brands of tire all have different handling characteristics. This could get into trouble, especially in the rain. Although if you're down in Melbourne, I hear rain has been pretty scarce over the last few years.
On another note, are you a Super V8 race series fan? One of the Ford Falcons, Number 6, has our company, Caterpillar, as its primary sponsor.
Best of luck on your search for the right tires, Mate.
Cheers.

why not look at BFG g-Force T/A KDW-2? They're priced well here in the states and have better than average ratings and reviews. I don't know if they're available in your sizes. I know they fit for 18s.
Good luck, bob.

Apologies - just read some posts from jjgdyr who seems to have recommended Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 many times.
One question though... I think mine are 225/50/17 and 245/50/17. jjgdyr suggested 245/45/17's on the frt and 255/45/17's on the rears. I was looking at his posts but couldn't find an explanation of the benefit of these vs the stock size. Also on Goodyear's website I can't find those sizes.
Which size should I get?

bobinz:
I replaced my stock tires with Eagle F1 GS D3 245/45/17's on the front and 255/45/17's on the rear.
I have over 12k miles on them and love them.
Toyo Proxys are also great tires.

zpoe, that's not on the Goodyear Australian website list my friend - see above. You probably get a better choice in the US - (US vs OZ - more choice, cheaper prices, more pay, less tax - you are very lucky people!) .
Do you know the difference in driving characteristic between 225/245 vs 245/255. If it's not much or no advantage on bad Aussie roads I won't bother looking and will take the standard size.
Thanks

you canalso use the tire rack site for another option... they have a questionaire setup to pinpoint your tire needs... whether or not you demand performance or comfort and the like... it'll match you up with a good tire for what you need... or you could just do what i do and ask which sticks to the road the best and which one looks cooler...lol...cause honestly i couldn't care about anything else...

Hey zpoe. Help me out here. How are your tires on the ice/snow compared
to our stock tires? Any better? I know our 350Zs are never gonna be great
for ice/snow but a significant improvement would help. Your tires are what I
want to go to for the street exactly. Yes I have a winter beater car that I
drive if snow expected, but I would like some improvement on just light snow
as I get caught out unexpectedly at work and it snows when forecasted not
to, alas...
