Q:
if i ever pull one again it will be too soon....i have 3 buddies that each have a 2000 turbo 2.5rs. first one shattered second gear...so we dropped it and put a new one in...done deal
second car : pulled the tranny and everything put it back together and it leaked oil out the rear main, pulled it back apart and then put her pback together...damn thing still leaked.....figured out it was the catch can....so we pulled it again, put it all back together and some dumbass that hadn't been there at hooked up the catch can again thinkin he was helping us out...we didn't see this until after the drive and it was leaking AGAIN! so we pulled the tranny and replaced the rear main...took out the catch can and now the car is doing great.
third car: stock clutch is shot...so we pulled the tranny out tonight and we have to put it back in tomorrow...gonna be fun
AWD trannies with turbo piping ot make it eve more difficult.....definately a major PITA to get out...i can have my Z tranny dropped in about 30-40 mins....this one took us about 4 hrs to get out. i'm done after this...no more subaru trannies for me.

Awww, and I was lookin to get a Scoobie here, too bad
'73 Turbo, not much stock. Sold now... :-(

Yeah, the 5 speed transmissions are weak, the 6 speed is a lot better.
They shatter gears pretty easily from what I've read. I sort of baby my wrx... atleast as compared to how I drive other cars. If I ever do break it... I'll get an STI transmission put in.

Whew! You guys had me going there. I'm about five hours away from applying for a car loan to get an'05 STi. I was worried until Rabbit said the 6 spd is a lot better.
I've never heard that their 5 speeds were a problem until this thread. Subies are supposed to have a rep of being very reliable. They should look into that if that's the case!
"i have 3 buddies that each have a 2000 turbo 2.5rs..."
I'm going to assume that they put the turbo on there. If that was the case, then would you expect any less from the transmission (regardless if it's weak to begin with) after adding that much power to the engine when the transmission wasn't designed for it?
God must love stupid people, he made SOOOOO many of them!

oh...i'm not bashing the tranny....just how many times i've removed one!
A:
Don't base your car purchase on reading 3 posts from people you don't know. Their ideas may be right or wrong, you can't tell because it's hearsay. What if 4 people replied that the transmissions are great? You can't be that easily swayed by a small amount of hearsay. I'm not bashing anyone's opinions either, hearsay is not necessarily bad - it might be right on. But if you're making a $30K purchase, don't say "Whew!" when 1 person says a transmission is great.

Let's just say that it's pretty easy to shatter the gears in the 5 speed because it's pretty easy to launch the cars a lot harder than you'd think. Now the 5 speeds in the 2002 and 2003 models had synchro issues also. I know that's better in the 6 speed as well. I believe the gears are stronger in the 6 speed also... but I don't know a ton about them.
Also, keep in mind a turbo 2.5RS is probably making more horsepower than a wrx, so it's more likely to happen... as they have a half liter of displacement on the wrx.

I have a lot of Subaru friends and they all have destroyed trannies in their imprezas. Thats probably the weakest part of their drive train. They openly admit that their trannies are not good enough for the car. I do heard the STi tranny is better though.

Uh, if you didn't know subura's had transmissions rivaling mitsubishi in quality you didn't not do your homework, you didn't even go to class!
Given people I know may drive their cars marginally harder than the average impreza/sti owner [doubt it], everyone of them except 1 of the sti's has had serious transmission problems.
Basic rule-do NOT drag OR pop the clutch even from a roll in those cars. The STI's have a beefier transmission but it's still fragile compared to most.
Whey do impreza transmissions [or subaru in general really] suck? They are designed to handle the 222hp, but not withstand the abuse from the 4wd setup.

I am on my 3rd Subaru and have not had any problem with the transmissions. However, I have some clutch chatter when the car is cold - less than 30F. It goes away in minutes - when the car is warm. My current Subaru is a 03 Legacy GT with a 5 speed. I use it for commuting (50miles/day) and do not exercise it very hard.

I think subaru was a little underrated before the Impreza came out. They made very reliable cars, people in the rockies drive them through hell and back.

agreed - my buddy is at the University of Wyoming - he wanted to buy a Subaru, but they are WAY overpriced and sought-after near the Rockies.

If you abuse any car it will break. I've owned my WRX for almost 4 years and 55k miles and have only had to change the oil. I'm sure it's a bitch to change the tranny. Hell, it took 4 hours just to take out my pre-cat and install a racing uppipe. Very tight squeeze, much different from all the room in a 1st gen Z.
I hope your new tranny lasts a long time, good luck!

My uncle has a subaru 2.5rs its nickname was "glass gears" b/c they shattered and stripped so easily. Buyer beware of an 2000ish subaru

Takahashi...that wouldn't be because your friends are #$# stupid and go out and see how fast they can get an AWD vehicle to lauch, is it?
I have a few Subaru friends and relatives as well and they never mentioned anything about drivetrain issues....NEITHER did any of the performance magazine reviews. And the STi has been out well long enough (since '04) for them to mention that.
Common sense=not doing 5K rpm clutch dump launches in a $28+K vehicle that is still under warranty
Stupidity=Trying to prove that your Subaru is the fastest on the planet
