Q:

..Does anyone know if those objects that resemble closet doors that some people mount on the back of their cars are functional? SERIOUSLY! Do they have some function, or not? Some of those devices look costly...to be mounted on a front-wheel drive vehicle...
Second...are tractor-trailor rigs using speed governors now? I know there is a fuel crunch, and those people are driving slower..but being behind someone who is doing 65 1/2 mph and passing someone who is doing 65 mph ( and tying up traffic for half a mile) can be tedious...I set my cruise control on 70 mph. and can speed up to pass slower drivers, thus keeping time in the left lane to a minimum...what's the truckers' excuse?

Speeding up to pass might save time in the left lane, but wastes gas compared to running the faster speed full time and timing your lane changes.
Rear louvers on the back hatch window help keep the car much cooler on hot days, and provide a degree of security for the lack of interior visibility from the outside (can't see in).

No, I'm not referring to louvers...it's those things that resemble aircraft wings..and what about the answer to the question about speed governors...?
I have louvers on my '75, by the way....

NO speed governors on any vehicles I know of, they just want to leave it in cruise control for the mileage benefits and the lack of police attention, and don't give a damn about the hurried commuters behind them.
The ricer-wings are purely cosmetic and probably hurt fuel mileage a bit for all the drag, and rear downforce they produce.

There are speed govenors on most newer commercial vehicles. But... they are easy to remove and most people do so. The new gadget is GPS location, so that companies can track their shipment and keep tabs on their drivers. Some companies have strict MPH limits on vehicles in different states.
Personally I think its a good thing large trucks cant go past 65. If 65 is supposed to be the "safe speed" because of reaction time and braking ability, and Trucks can go that fast..... does that mean we can go faster, lets say 85 because we can stop faster. (Ultimately having the same braking distance)
But I get a ticket for going over 65, so that must mean its safe limit pertains to my cars stopping ability, so trucks should be limited to iunno 35. Another reason some traffic laws frustrate me because their hypocritical.

when i travel out west, i notice people go much faster, safer. in the midwest and in the east unless you are in cornfields and farm country on the interstate there is just too much population to go fast, and i think people get a frame of reference that doesnt let them think about someplce else where going faster is just as safe. i dont think 65 is a reasonable speed driving across nebraska, and its too fast driving through cleveland in a rainstorm. germany had strict rules for going fast and it would be nice to see that kind of system here imo. until then i guess ill just make my own german highway here! lol!
A:

Yup, the Germans do know how to travel. Variable speed signs based on traffic and weather would be great.

Most newer commercial vehicles (think kenworth tractors with cat diesel engines) do infact have govenors on them. They are very easy to change though. We always reset ours on our company fleet to 90mph. Factory sets them around 70. But with a laptop and the right software you can change both the top speed and acceleration capabilities of these vehicles.

I thought some of the big trucking cos. had data recorders on their rigs that would record all sorts of stuff. Yes or no?
