Don't use one of those crappy jacks supplied in the car when trying to work on your car. I had one holding my Eclipse up the other day and was trying to work on my axle and the car slid off of the jack and the frame rail landed on my foot. It didn't really hurt that bad, but had to have 2 surgeries on my foot and it was pretty nasty. I'll try to scan the pic and post it on the net so you guys can lose your lunch over it :)

I was working UNDER my car with just a crappy stock jack, AND it was 15 years old, AND the car weighs 3600lbs. I can fit under the car without jacking it up [remember, I can bleed the clutch on the z without jacking it up] but if it fell the extra couple inches of travel due to the all would have probably killed me. Don't worry, don't have to go under there again for a long time.

Thats why people stress the importance of jack stands. I've been guilty of doing it in the past, and I've had cars fall before using a stock jack. Luckly I didnt get hurt, but I've definatly learned my lesson.

Front wheel drive cars can drive up on those maintenance ramps really well, actually much better than rear wheel drive cars.
Always block the wheels, put it in gear, and use the E-brake.
If you don't use ramps, use jack stands.

get the rhino ramps (i think that is what they are called). They are plastic and very sturdy. They also have this rubber foot that keeps them from sliding when you try and drive up them. very good ramps

same thing happened to me last year, only it was a saab, and the rotor pinned my ankle down. no surgery, but a pretty nasty circular scar like a big cigarette burn.

Cool. Glad to see your still around (be careful Tony D may argue that one). You do know that there is a reason they put the warning on jacks "Never get underneath a vehicle that is only supported by a jack". People have been killed this way. The story that always gets me is the one where the father was underneath his car, jack slipped and he was caught underneath. His 2 year old calls 911, I can tell how has the bigger brain of the two. Could be a Darwin Award but it happens way to much.

Yeah, jack stands are definitely worth using. Chock up the other set of wheels and give the car a good shake to make sure everything is nice and secure.
And follow the instructions...
They say 'always use on a level surface'. They say 'never use on loose gravel surface'. I ignored both pieces of advice at once a couple of years ago and nearly lost my father. The old fat guy can really move when a 1500kg of Swedish steel is bearing down at him.
In all seriousness, it was the stupidist thing I have ever done in my life. But he was being stupid as well, and should know better than me. So 50% of the blame is on him.
You have no idea how paranoid I am about this sort of thing now. A scare is a good thing.
Look forward to the gory surgery photos.

On the death certs the primary COD is usually listed as "massive crushing trauma" and secondary COD being "was under a car when the jack collapsed." I've seen plenty of these.
Its only funny when it happens to Homer - DOH!
The best example was when one of the guys I worked with was telling me he had been using the bumper jack to work under his car. A couple of weeks later I called him in and showed him the death cert on my desk - it was from a guy (never any females) with the SAME exact name as his who was killed when the bumper jack collapsed when he was working under his car.
Got his attention - he went out and got a set of stands and a floor jack.
Rusty but running.
Polish cell phone and two tubes of Aluma-seal.
And, now we are historic.
