i just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to geico!
no seriously though. i did. i tried them last, and they actually saved me QUITE a bit more than anyone else. i HATE their commercials though, which is why i actually called them last. but guess what? only 160 a month! and why am i so giddy about that? because i'm 18 and last year i was paying 300 a month and that was WITHOUT the turbo !!! i guess its just funny how these things work sometimes.

Been there.
Here's what to watch out for.
Geico is good insurance to have if you have an accident that is your fault or partially your fault.
Why? Cause they don't pay their claims much or at all.
You see, they are BIG and have lots of money for attorneys.
So, if they can weasel out of paying a claim, they will.
That is good for you until YOU have a claim under comprehensive or theft.
Then, you won't get much for your car.
Long story, short....dropped 'em and went back to state farm.

I will never use Geico because i got hit and they took 3 months to pay out. Guy ran a stop sign 3 houses down from where i live out of a church parking lot. The cops citied him, and put it clear as day in the police report that it was his fault. Made me upset..........Considering my vette set there, and set there

This is the problem with "discount" insurance. The tend to be sneaky when dealing with claims.
My family have had zero problems with AAA. Our claims were all dealt with VERY promptly and without any problems or setbacks. I once had a crash and had the car repaired within 10 days of the incident. I couldnt' have done it faster myself.

Guy with Geico insurance totalled my truck 3 years ago, it was totally his fault. The local Geico rep came in looked at my truck and lowballed the hell out of the quote. I sent him home and asked him to rethink his offer. Two days later, he came back with a slightly better quote, and I told him my back was hurting so bad that I had not even thought about my truck. The very next day he came back with a quote that was roughly what I thought the truck was worth all along, plus $150 for pain and suffering. I did have a bruised tailbone when my truck landed in a canal. You have to play hardball with some of them.

I've been with GEICO for 19 years. Reason: Initially, cause they were the cheapest. I sold my car and moved from Iowa to DC and didn't have a car for six months. Several places wanted an arm/leg and other body parts when I bought a car. They said they had to because I had no insurance for the past 6 months. I told every company I talked to that I had no car and thus no need for insurance. GEICO gave me best quote and after the first six months passed, they dropped my rates substantially (I was 24 at the time).
I've had three claims:
1. Theft (of a Z of all things!). They paid in full after 30 days. No problem, no question. Paid the full price I had just paid for the car (stolen within 30 days of buying it), so I was able to pay off the loan and buy another car (not a z) with what was left.
2. Accident that was not my fault where my truck was totaled. They paid for my truck and even got my deductible back from the Maryland Insurance Fund (place where folks who have screwed up and can't get insurance anywhere else go). The woman that hit me had an attorney -- she tried to claim injury. WHen attorney saw the records, police report, etc., he basically said, "oh... never mind."
3. Van vs deer. GEICO gave me a quote on fixing the van. I took it to the body shop of MY choice and due to damage that was not evident on the surface, the work cost $1,500 more than estimate. They paid no problem, no questions asked. All I paid was my $200 deductible.
Perhaps I've just had good luck, but have no problems with GEICO. They asked one year if I had any tickets.. I told the person, "Yes, an improper left turn." The agent on the phone laughed and my rates didn't go up a penny.
And of course an adjuster from another insurance company if you're in an acident will lowball you. That shouldn't surprise you. It's not just GEICO I'd be willing to bet.

If you have any military affiliation (i.e. vet, current member, son or daugher of a member or former member), USAA is the way to go. They aren't the cheapest (but they still have very low rates), but what makes them stand out is the way they do handle claims, and their customer service. Any company that serves the country's members of the armed forces is going to have 1st rate customer service.
I backed into a guy (after I partially pulled out into the road(the curve was blind and a car was zipping around the curve) and I backed back in to avoid him and backed into a car that was a bit over zealous and was right on my ass, unfortunately it was my fault) and we swapped information. Since it was in a parking lot (private property), the cops couldn't file a report. USAA called me the next day and told me they were going to take care of it.
Sorry about the rambling on and on but I have found very few insurance companies that have the collective quality that USAA has, and I even work for an insurance company (Direct).
God must love stupid people, he made SOOOOO many of them!

Watch out for GEICO giving you a "low" rate for a few months and then jacking up the price. That is very common among discount insurance companies.

E-3 US Army at the time (this was early 2001). Called to get a rate quotewith USAA, had two tickets on my record. Sales rep flat out told me no they would not insure a 20 year old with two tickets and only an E-3. He said if I were an E-5 sure they would consider it.
AAFES has dicked me and many others over more often than I can count. Places that do business with the military are pricks because so many military personel (young kids with families mostly) try to get over on everything and screw it all up for the rest of us.
Fort Hood National Bank, only services military. APR on a $500 loan for 6 months, 86.7%. Why? Because they can and most people don't pay attention to it, they just want the money.
Businesses associated with the military are not good companies to work with and their customer service doesn't have to be the best, especially if you're not wearing gold on your collar. One of the questions 99% of the companies customer service desks will ask you first is, "current rank?" Then they know whether or not they can be an @ss.

Zers,
I have heard horror stories about every company! I find it hard to believe I now have 17 years in the auto/home/life insurance industry as an agent. Every company has target risk categories that vary the price tons. Every company also has different rates per zip code, driver, age, gender, experiance, tickets, accidents, car, coverages, prior insurance and credit ratings.
AIG,AMICA are big companies that are little know with great rates, USAA for Military, Farmers Insurance rocks her in New Mexico.

I switched from Geico to Farmers because Farmers was cheaper. My Z is my daily driver, and I pay 70/month for it for comprehensive.
I also get my own agent to deal with, whom I call when I have a problem rather than some ubiquitous 1800 number.

Perhaps you're an E3 because you went to the PX for insurance (AAFES) instead of the USAA agent....
Army and AirForce Exchange Service is where you shop for stuff.
USAA is the Insurance Company...
I can't help it, AAFES paid a lot of money to my wife to run the gold room, more than I was making as an E4, that's for sure!
And funny you should mention "Gold on the Collar" for a period of time, when it was close to reenlistment, I considered the idea of going onto my wifes' "Rank" with AAFES, and becoming "her dependent" because technically she outranked me, and we would have been eligible for officer's housing were she the sponsoring individual.

After reading the first post I have to say he/she does not know what they are talking about. Last year was my worst year for cars. I had the following all happen:
Brand New Mazda 3 t-boned and totalled
98 Dodge Durango stolen
03 Mitsubishi Lancer Tboned and totalled
Out of all three I got exactly what I was suppose to get.
What geico does for all of their claims (stolen or accident) is they get the market price from a 3rd party which does an investigation of 12 cars in your area for sale of the same or close to it. They are all dealer sales. They then take the average of all 12 cars and give you your total loss claim. This is what I got for all 3 cars:
Mazda 3 (purchased for 11K) total claim check 13500 minus ded.
98 Dodge Durango (purchased from dad for 5K) total claim check 10800 minus ded.
03 Mitsubishi Lancer (purchased 1 year ago for 12500) total claim check for 14350 minus ded.
So Geico will give you what your car is worth. The only time you have issues is when it's a classic or modified. At that point they want the appraised value.
Progress:
Z32 Had to sell for DD 06 Sentra :(
S30 one of these days I will get around to putting it all back together.

Where did you find that information? Is it the most fined based on number of fines or total amount of fines or highest average fine or some other basis?

I dropped GEICO as well, they took 8 months to get me a $900 claim - every time I called to check on the claims status, a new rep had my file. I have been with State Farm for awhile and like them much better.
