Indestructable comes to mind. I have seen them with 400,000+ on the clock and still running strong. Hell, you can run them on two quarts of oil for months and they won't break.

Agreed. The 22R is an incredible engine used in the toyota trucks and GT model coupes. Awesome engine with lots of possibilities. I had a 20R in a celica. Pulled the head and had it milled, put back on and the car was rocket. Left my 95 Grand Am GT in the dust.

The week point in a 22R is the single row timing chain and plastic timing guides and tensioners. Ask anyone who specializes in older Toyotas how many 22R timing chain jobs they have done, you'll be amazed.

I'm with naviathan on this one. Had a 91 4x4 truck (it had the 22R-E but the same engine nonetheless). I ran it (unknowingly) for 10,000 miles with the #4 exhaust valve burnt out of it. I had a minor overhaul done to it and it ran like a scalded dog.
As ZX says (and that really goes for any model engine), they do have their drawbacks.
Speaking of the 22R (which is a 2.4L), am I the only one that doesn't like the naming standards Toyota uses to name their engine models?
Ok, for example, the Nissan RB26DETT:
RB: race bred (or something similar)
26: 2.6L displacement
D: DOHC configuration
E: electronic ignition
TT: turbo turbo (or twin turbo)
Or, VG30E
V: cylinders in a V configuration
30E: 3.0L electronic ignition
Now, what about the Toyota 2JZGTE.
I think the T and E stand for the same thing as Nissan, but WTF is all that other crap. Most of you know what engine the 2JZGTE is, but if you didn't, you'd have no idea what displacement or type engine.
or the 7MGTE. WTF is the 7 for???????
Sorry for the digression there. Not trying to hijack the thread!
God must love stupid people, he made SOOOOO many of them!

I have a
1986 4-Runner (manual) with 220,000 on it
A friend of mine is a toyota master mechanic and when I started my search for the 4-runner he told me
No V6's, no auto tannies, and no rust on the vechicle and no turbos. He said the toyotas are really thin in the back so rust can cause quite a bit of frame damage very quickly. As for the comments about the timing chain and plastics, just have them changed as soon as you buy the car. It doesn't matter what condition they are in, just have them changed. You will be thankful in the long run.
Apart from that, I've have my runner since last April with no problems. She pulls strong, is a blast without the top on, and does decently off-roading (clearance being the issue here). It is very reliable and is my daily driver.

The single row timing chain can be upgraded to a double row.
I had to replace two single rows around 120k miles. Other than that they are awesome motors.

They even made a 22R-ET. I know the 87 trucks had it for an option but I don't know what else it came in.

I always wanted to take a 22RET and drop it into a late 3rd gen celica. IMHO the 22R was a terrible engine for the celica, the turbo would help make up for it.

Just curious; aren't the 22R's an old industrial engine that Toyota used as a stopgap that ended up working real well.

If im not mistaken this is how the model names work.
2JZGTE
2-the version of the engine, ie. version 2.0
JZ-the engine family or series
G-the head type, G denotes a performance head, F denotes an emissions/ecnonmy head
T-turbo
E-electronic fuel injection
This formula applies to all toyota engines afaik for ex.
4AFE (A-series engine, emissions head, EFI)
4AGE
4AGZE (Z denotes supercharged)
3SFE
3SGE
3SGTE
5SFE
7MGE
7MGTE
etc.
Note that toyota doesnt indicate the displacement like nissan does. But to stay on topic the 22R will run forever and like said above is best suited to trucks as it is a fairly large and torquey 4cyl but doesnt make much hp.

Its actually called the 22RTE...not 22R-ET!
135hp stock...made it the fastest import track back in 1987 when it was introduced...production was only for 2years, finding a 22RTE these days is ultra rare.
200hp was easier to get on a high compression, side draught mikuni'd 22R than on the 22RTE.
I have seen guys make the 22RTE work hard to get over 250hp, but it costs silly money to do so. The heads are awful and flow like clogged straw. Its a pity there was not a 16V twin cam head that fit on the 2.4L block.

i dont need to change the timing parts as its got all new timing gears, belt or chain(whatever it has) new oil pump, new spark plugs.ac works pefect power steering works perfect. interior is in almost pefect shape. the boy i bought it off of got it gave to him because the valves started rattling and the oil light was on. he changed the oil and put some of that lucas oil in it adjusted the valves and now it runs great again

A friend of mine has an 87 Toyota 4x4 w/ a 22RTE (I think RET sounds better). It's pretty neat.

I had my 22R apart for a blown head gasket (my fault, long story) and it still had the factory honing marks on the cyl walls at 220,000. The most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. I kick my own butt every day for giving it to my Dad. Upgrade to the double row timing chain if you feel like it, but its not necessary.
