I don't like all this retro crap. Are they going to pay royalties to the designers of the 60's? They did all the work. Come up with something new, quit living in the past, I say.

It does look a lot better than the Charger... BUT it looks too much like the old Challenger! It's almost the same car on the outside. They should have put a little more thought into it. But not a bad car by any means.

Too bad all the new retro looking cars weigh 2 tons. Their performance sucks.
A:

I guess if you want new, futuristic styling you might consider buying a Nissan. I prefer the retro look, and feel the 350Z could have been so much better, and more popular if they had thrown a thought towards the rich heritage of the previous models.
I love the new Mustang, and can see some really good things with the new Camaro concept that will have it competing head to head with the Stang in short order.
The Challenger looks like a freshened up version of the 70-73 Challenger which gives it great, but a little too recognizable looks. I love the look of the new Dodge, but it just seems the designers are leaning a bit too much on the original 1970s design.
Black, bumperless, 78 Z with MSA superturbo system, K/N cone filter, ported intake, and exhaust manifolds.....15.9 @87 mph.
A:

"Too bad all the new retro looking cars weigh 2 tons. Their performance sucks."
Yeah, well the original cars weighed more and had worse performance (at least handling anyway)
Does anyone know if Dodge actually wised up and put IRS, or a POS live axle in the Challenger?
God must love stupid people, he made SOOOOO many of them!
A:

I like, really really like the new retro look instead of the waterd down look: like the Thunderbird.
Howcome the Thunderbird looks more like the 1st gen Corvette?
I'm so sick of the "jelly bean" "euro-egg" shapes on cars and the "Mad Max" look of trucks and SUV's; for anyone's sake how could Cadillac make their sedan look like a heidious SUV?
Of course that's just my opinion.
But it's the only one that counts!

i agree with erzelda, i really like the look of the new challenger . but i am biased because i owned 5 1970 challengers back in the 70s and early 80s . they were a really fun car to drive. of course i had big blocks and mostly 4spd.
im curious why they put a cuda style grill in it but it still looks good.
i dont think the weight of this challenger will be much of a factor if they gear it right i think its going to have a 400+ hp engine.

I dont know how much more popular the 350Z can be - by the January 2004, 1/4 of all sports car sales in the U.S. were 350Zs (50,000+ sold), and it has been a consistent best-seller since. I believe, next to the Ford Mustang, its the most popular sports car in America.

that challenger has similar body lines as the old one, but it actually quite modernized. I love that particular remake, and I like the stang too, the charger and the camaro look like crap. How can you guys complain about heavy weight? The challenger is only supposed to weigh like 3100 lbs or so?? Granted thats not light but it will weight less thana Z32 and about the same as a z31!!!

Why the hell are people so obsessed with 22 inch rims and slim profile tires? I can't stand that crap. Put some T/A's and some rally wheels on it. Then it would look cool.

Shameful! Looks too much like original! This is another way to cut R&D costs??
C'mon, this is getting rediculous! What is the target market, 45-55 year-olds? What about the rest of us who don't remember or don't care what a '69 looked like??
Think about this:
You go to an antique store and fall in love with an original [place item number here], but can't afford it. So you buy a REPLICA. Three years later you get tired of it because it is not the original, and is not built the same, and doesn't make you happy to own it. Now what do you do? You try to sell it, but everyone else who bought one of these feels exactly the same way, and is trying to sell theirs too! Then you consider the fact that GM-made [place item number here] take the biggest depreciation over the first three years, and you get more depressed!
Then you start drinking. You can't find your wife to complain to because she ran off with someone she met at the gym because she is also going through a mid-life crisis. Oh, she also emptied your bank account, so you can't buy gas to go to the store to get more booze.
In your fog, you stumble out into the road to hitch a ride and you get run over by a fully tuned supercharged 350Z on it's way to a club event, because there are a lot of other enthusiasts who like Z's and can also live in the present and don't need to be driving their car they had in High School (which for some of us would be a Nissan 200SX hatchback).
The lesson is: Don't encourage them! They will stop this nonsense if you don't buy their cheap ripoffs of other people's artful designs from 35 years ago! This is a fad that will pass, that's for sure. I keep telling myself this everytime I see a "bellbottom" at the mall.

Here are performance specs on new Challenger. Not bad !! And wait till engine mods appear for it.
Like Challengers past, this concept packs more than its share of muscle under the hood in the form of an SRT-tuned 6.1-liter, 425-hp, 420-lb-ft Hemi V8, linked to a six-speed manual transmission. Chrysler estimates the fully functional concept should rocket 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, clip the quarter-mile in 13 seconds and attain a top speed of 174 mph.

IRS? Solid axle? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Is that the only thing they left out?
God must love stupid people, he made SOOOOO many of them!
A:

Its based on the lx platform used on charger, 300 and magnum. Here is a little info on it.
The LX cars use a five-link, fully independent rear suspension. A FWD company, Chrysler engineers experienced with the RWD Viper and Prowler and all-wheel drive minivans teamed up with Mercedes RWD C-class and E-class engineers. The result is a European-style rear suspension that consists of a center-mounted differential and pivoting rear axles. These are mounted to the subframe, bolted to the body. On uneven road surfaces, a car with an independent rear suspension both rides better and handles better than a comparable car with a solid axle.

Try 4100 pounds. That's about 300 lb. HEAVIER than the '70 Challenger.
Pretty lame effort, IMO. They tried to copy the '70's looks verbatim, but it is telling that the car looks too big, and the hoodline too high, despite ridiculously large-diameter concept-car-only wheels.
Here's hoping they can bring the Camaro in at 3400 lb. or LESS. 3200 and I'm buying one for sure (no worries, it'll never happen!).

quite frankly, Dodge did to the Challenger what SHOULD HAVE happened to the Charger. I love it, and as for the retro styling, what's better than old school styling, with the modern technology? And I don't know about you, but I'm tired of cars all looking alike. I want my car to be recognizeable for what it is. "That is a Challenger". I LOVE IT!!!!
