Q:

my friend has a 1998 Subaru Legacy GT...he took the car to the dealer today and they advised he was leaking oil from the headgaskets and seeping oil from the rear main seal....they quoted him $2000 for everything. parts and labor. It's the dealer so I assume that's high but what's a good price for someone to fix this. he can't do it himself and neither can I. any ideas. thanks. it really all started when he noticed a couple quarter size oil spots on his driveway...if that helps

It's a 1998 Subaru, why bother putting that kind of money into it. Tell him to put a piece of cardboard under the car to protect the driveway. A small oil leak will not hurt the motor as long as he keeps it topped off. I also doubt that it need a head gasket, the valve cover gasket is probably leaking.

Valve cover gaskets are painfully easy to replace, and could be accomplished in less than a 1/2 hour each and for about $15 each.
The rear main seal is questionable, I bet a coupla oil pan bolts are loose.

The Sube flat 4 almost always requires pulling the engine to get a headgasket. Ugly, worse the 2.5l of those years are notoriuos for head gasket failures. Look for the coolant tank bubbling after hard driving. But if just oil leaks... won't hurt the engine a damn :)

my buddy has a 2.5rs that keeps leaking at the rear main.....those AWD trannies are a PITA to pull and put back in

Just do it the easy way. I've owned 4 Subarus and you NEVER pull the transmission. But you can have the engine out of there in about 2 hours. I pulled the engine to replace my clutch and I have pulled the engine to replace the valve cover gaskets before. Yes... it is necessary on some models.
Pull the engine and do it yourself. You will be shocked at how easy it is on those Legacys. While it's out, might as well change that timing belt too. I love those cars!
