So theres this little red Hyundai (looks like a late 80's/early 90's car) sitting right outside my apartment building. The thing has no license plates and no registration. In the 6 months that I've been living there, I haven't seen it move or seen anyone touch it. A while back my roommate and I were talking about it and come to the conclusion that, "surely...it must be abandoned". Its just that I don't live in the kind of neighborhood where I think people would care enough about something like that to report it. And we were even joking about hotwiring it to see if we could get it to start. That was a while ago.
Now for this morning. I wake up and the toilet is plugged. One of my other friends in the building is borrowing our plunger, and he wasn't answering his door. So then I was joking with my roommate, "I'm gonna go outside and grab a sh*t-stick!"...to unplug the toilet of course. So as I walk outside to get my "sh*t-stick"...my roommate yells out the window, "Hey...get a windshield wiper off that red car!". And I was thinking, "Haha! This is hilarious!"
As I start fiddling with the wiper, I hear a loud "Can I help you with something?!?!" I turn around...and in the building next to ours, theres a guy standing on his balcony looking right at me. And I'm like "What?". He repeats himself. Then I get it. I ask if its his car and he says yeah. So I walk over to his balcony and explain that we thought it was abandoned. He says its not running because he needs to put in a new battery. I definitely won't touch it again, and he may or may not think I'm full of it...who knows (but he probably does). I don't think theres any question that he'll be keeping his eye on me and/or his car.
Needless to say...I'll be careful where I park my Z from now on.

In L.A. the car would have been towed after 72 hours unless he moved it forward or back one parking spot at least.
I don't think I would ever touch a car on the street, unless it was ticketed and about to be towed, and even then....probably not!
You're luck you weren't in Texas. They could shoot you for what you were doing!

Same thing here in Mn. but they mark the tires first to see if its been moved at all, if not then its' ticketed, then they tow it. My neighbor got his Taurus SHO ticketed last month because he can't just park it and leave it with a 4-sale sign on it in the street. It's kinda funny because he has to keep moving it from odd side of street to even side of street depending on the snow removal...I say he's nuts...with 77,000 miles he wants $9K for it still, haha....it'll sit forever and its been four months already!

Something here in El Paso Texas. I have a coworker who parked his car in the street while on vacation, he came back and they towed it! Apparantly a neighbor who didn't like him called and got it towed because it didn't move in 72 hrs.

If I were you I would go and apologise to him again and maybe take him a box of chocolates as a peace offering. You should aslo re-explain that you thought it was dumped.
At least this way you also get to be friendly with the neigbours.
