*Welding product* Has anybody used this?

General Chat

Q:

Well In a week my project car is making a trip to Maine for our new home. On a trailer ofcourse. And the place I'm moving into has a garage off of the house so I can actually spend time working on my car. My first two purchases are going to be a compressor and a welder. I was just going to buy and arc welder for now and upgrade later but I was wondering if anybody has used this product or something similar.

I have a friend that welds for a living so if I need anything heavy duty welded I canjust have him do it but I would like to have something decent in my shop for doing body work.
I'm fairly new in the welding world and was wondering if this looks like a decent product or a gimic. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

An arc welder will not be to handy on a Z and will not work well on thin metal. however the attachment you linked to may make it useable but why bother. I would recomend getting a mig welder instead for doing body work, it would be much more usefull for your Z. I have both welder types and also a Acetylene gas setup. A gas welder is also a better choice than the arc welder as it will work great on thin metal, you can use it to loosen stuck bolts and it will even cut through metal and can be used to straighten warped or dented areas.
PS:, Good luck with your move, Maine is a beautiful state.

I'm moving to MIlo ME, its a town about 30 miles north of Bangor. I grew up in Maine and my whole family is there.
I was just curious about welders because its main usage is going to be sheet metal. I would much rather spend the extra money and have something versatile but I dont need anything that can weld a bank vault shut...or do I...no I dont need anything super heavy duty. My friend welds for Bath Iron Works, working on battle ships and submarines and I was planning on having him point me in the right direction once I had the field narrowed down but I didn't want to be completely ignorant on the subject.
There is also a 260Z that some guy has been restoring for a while that I might try and take off his hands. All the body work is done and the whole interior is done, it just needs the engine tuned up.

i just purchased a millermatic 135 mig....best thing i ever bought...allows you to do so much more with your car....should have bought one earlier....this welder will let you do whatever you want to your car.
A:

Skip the "stitch welder", just go with a MIG, and don't pull the trigger for more than a half second at a time---viola! Now you have a STITCH WELDER!
Some of the more highline MIG units have built in timers so you just pull the trigger weld till it stops, move, pull the trigger weld till it stops, move, pull the trigger weld till it stops......
Like I said before, there is a reason they coined the term "MIG MONKEYS"!

Splurge and get a MIG. After doing the car you'll be looking for things to weld. It's a lot of fun.
