Grr, people on Ebay suck sometimes

Q:

I've got my JE pistons on Ebay for sale. It has a reserve naturally (don't want someone getting them for $50 or something). It has 4 bids, at a total of $20.50 right now. That means 3 people have been outbid. Lemme ask you guys something, if you saw something on Ebay that was brand new, that you know sells for several hundred dollars and saw it had a reserve, would you honostly think you could get it for say $15? If you're not going to throw down an honost bid that you might think it's worth, say $500 or something, then why even bid at all?

put your starting bid at $400. this will weed out a lot of biders.

A:

Starting bid at $400 also costs more to list ;)
A:

Interesting question, now can I ask you a question too, why do you start bidding at $0.99 and not at $200 plus?

If the reserve is there...why do I need to start the listing at $200 and pay more money than listing it at .99 cents? Ebay and Pay Pal charge enough money, gotta save some somewhere. And I know that if they're going to sell that the last few hours will be where it really takes off, I sell plenty on Ebay...I was just making a point that why bid like $10 and be outbid, do you REALLY expect to get them for $10? lol
A:

Sometimes I will throw a "test" bid on something I know I won't win before I bid on the other auction I am after. It’s just to make sure I don't get hit with a log in prompt and to make sure every thing cached before I go for a last moment snipe.

Ebay suck sometimes, almost as much as people comming here to say how much.

i have gotten so many badass deals on ebay that i lost count. everyone who low-ball bids has illusions of some housewife that came across so and so item at a yard sale and is listing them not knowing what she has. the truth of the matter is there is a definite market for almost all items listed. you can count on the bids being within $20 or so of the current ebay market value. you might as well forgo the reserve and list everythin at 99 cents. don't fret on not getting your reserve met as the REAL bidding begins about 60 seconds before the auction ends. all you need to do is check how many people are watching your item and the warfare will begin right at the end ;) i once sold an old pioneer tuner on ebay and it was at about $100 for 6 days and 23.9 hours and at the last minute the price shot up to over $500!! snipers are everywhere......

they will go up...but i'd worry about trying to indirectly sell your other parts outside of ebay, through the auction for this one item....don't think ebay will like that.

i thought the whole reason for ebay was to get stuff people dont want for somewhat cheap. even though sellers can make nice profits.

I will bid some low price and be outbid right away and not worry about it. I only do that to seperate the things im watching and the things im bidding on it I have like 40 of the same product. But otherwise no.. I wouldnt bid on it at all, just watch it.

so your post says --Grr, people on Ebay suck sometimes--
are you refering to the people buying stuff at ridiculous low prices or sellers selling stuff at ridiculous high prices?
almost every buyer on ebay is looking for a good or great deal ( its that kind of market place) if you really want what you think the parts are worth why are you even trying to sell them there-- is it because putting them on ebay is so easy-much less work than trying to find a speed shop or individual that wants those parts in person. its the day and age of convience and sometimes you have to sacrifice for that convience.
consider the market place you have chosen to do business in.
now with that said i genuinely hope that as a fellow z car owner that you can get a fair price out of your parts and wish you the best of luck in any dealings you have on ebay, but sometimes you have to pay that extra amount to protect your investment.
hang in there and have faith that the bids will go up at the last minute as i have seen them do lots of times. i have only purchased a couple of items on an ebay auction but i have monitered alot of auctions to see where they ended up, and i have never bid on something i really wasnt prepared to pay a fair price to get.

I know the bids will go up...it's just amusing how people will try to get a set of pistons that cost me nearly $800 for like $13 lol
A:

That's what I do. Just so I can keep a record of it.

A:

yeah you just have to shake your head in amusment at how some people want to get something for nothing.
if you think youre goping to buy my $800.00 parts for $13.00 you just might be a redneck haha.
didnt mean to offend any rednecks out there just thought matt could use a little cheering up - and matt sorry the joke wasnt funnier thats why i could never make a living as a comedian-- i better just stick to pounding nails!!!

WOW! Talk about someone OVERSPENDING!
I would not offer you $600 for those WITH RINGS!
Why? That's how much they cost from JE.
Someone saw you coming in the door and made their comission!

Oh I'm not depressed about it in any way whatsoever :) I really don't care if they sell or not...now that I've found out how rather simple it is to assemble your own bottom end and save $500 or $600 or so. I might end up just getting a little machine work done and set a day or two aside.
And while I'm thinking about it, let's just say I assemble the bottom end and want to store it for a month or two until I get $ saved up to get the head work done, can I just spray WD40 all over it and maybe get some sort of engine bag from one of those places that sell parts?
A:

Spray with WD liberally, stick a desiccant bag in with it, and bag it.

What's a desiccant bag, is it like those drying agent things that come in boxes of shoes and stuff? lol
A:

I get it by the drumfull for work. Even the old stuff I drain out is good, it just needs to be put in an oven for a while at 350 degrees and have the water baked out of it.
I use it in sacks of linen (old tableclothes from Salvation Army or Goodwill) and sewed up at home into various sized packets. Stick em in Tupperware or Rubbermaid Containers that seal tightly to keep parts from rusting, clothes from becoming musty, all sorts of crap.
You can buy it from bulk distributors for under .25 a pound in 1/4" pellet size if you buy by the Semi Load. Otherwise retail the stuff goes for between $1 and $4 a pound.
Chances are if you go to a compressor distributor that deals with Atlas Copco ZR or Ingersoll-Rand Sierra compressors, they will have five gallon buckets laying around that they removed form customer's air system dryers. It's a "throwaway item" after it's out. As long as it's still bright white or slightly off-white it's still regenerable. If it's dark tan or yellow, shy away it's been contaminated by oil or other nasty stuff and it won't regenerate.
After a few months, take the bag in, bake it in the oven for 1/2 hour, let it cool back down slowly with the door closed (to keep it from cracking) and stick it back in your bag and reseal it. it doesn't go bad, it just gets saturated with H20 and needs to be baked out.
Same stuff is in A/C Accumulator/Strainer/Dryers---can be baked out the same way!

if you are still wondering about the bidding issue, ebay will only allow the bid to go up so much for each bid received. so if the bid starts at $.99 then the first bid starts at $.99. the first person to bid could bid $600 and the bidding would still start at $.99. when a person bids the amount they put in is the max amount they are willing to bid, but it is not their bid. their bid is what ever the next amount available is

a work in progress, if i can ever get it started.but remember:
"never give up, never surrender."
A:

Lemme make sure I got this right...I can spend a few bucks buyin the pellet size stuff, and make a baggy of some sort to put it in. Then I throw it in the engine bag and this stuff sucks up the moisture? Then after a little while, I take it out, bake it to get it dry, and it'll keep the motor moisture free?
A:

i too hate ebay because i have to see stuff like this

You have also now mastered the basic function of all heated desiccant dryers currently in use in general industry!!!
"Activated Alumina" is what you want to look around for, that is what it is called generically. "Desiccant in general can be a few different things, but Activated Alumina is the general industrial stuff.
Silica Gel is in the little baggies they put in beef jerkey, but is quite a bit more expensive---because it is REALLY active in adsorbing moisture.
If you could fit your engine in a 55 gallon open headed drum with a sealed cover, you would only have to susupend the baggies from some rods so they wouldn't touch anything, seal it up, and be done with it for many years!!!
Using a bag, that really isn't sealed that great---I'd redo it occastionally because it will eventually suck up enough water from the air to saturate it and then it's not helping anything.
