What year is my turbo engine? (plus pics of my car)

General Chat

Q:

For those who can ID my new L28ET...what year is it? The ignition system is mostly what i want to know about since i will be doing megasquirt and need to figure out how im going to control ignition. It has a P90 head not a P90A FWIW.

You have an 81 ZXT engine there.
Details of pulley wheel modifications are on my cardomain page.
Or you can just slot the adjustment holes on the CAS Bracket, and that should give you enough ignition advance for the full 44 degrees advance during high vacuum conditions.
Piece of cake, the setup is the same as on the 82/83 you just adjust the timing a different way, with a crank mounted CAS, instead of turning the distributor/CAS assembly.

ianz was over, and was bedazzled by my 260 ZT today...
I waited till it was warmed up, and did a little "display squirt" from the back 40 up to the driveway in front of the house. I forgot how well it runs on-boost. Man, I don't know why anybody messes with the stock electrics---what a rush. PSSSSSSSSSHTFTTTT!

I see the iginition timing wheel on the crank shaft and the sensor. Does that displace the distributor on this engine?
(2) 280Zs, one getting changed a bit, one for parts.
A:

No.
It's just a CAS, it's inside the dizzy on 82 and 83 models.
Timing is controlled by the ECU on 81-83 Turbo ECU's.

First time I've seen the interior dash of one of the earlier Z's... You can see where they got the idea for the 350Z's dash! Looks almost exactly the same layout... Kinda funny, Nissan went from rounded (70s) to square (80s) back to rounded designs again (90s-00).
