NZR - Body Work on Son's Car...

General Chat

Q:

Needing to do a little water leakage control work on the rear of my son's used Corolla. A few years ago PO had a new lower rear panel (for bumper mounts) attached after a rear end collision (old one was cut out).
Looks like they used some type of latex (caulk) as the seam sealer -- and in a few places the stuff worked loose probably due to pinhole leaks causing some body rusting.
I've gotten rid of all the rust, primed/painted the spots and now need to reapply sealer. Is it OK to just use some hi durability latex caulk or is there a good seam sealer that's recommended? In the hidden spots (under bumper cover) was planning to use silicon caulking. But there are a few visible places (when trunk lid is up) that should be painted over -- so would like to use a paintable sealant there.
Any advice would be appreciated!

You can go to a body and paint supply house and get a good quaality seam sealer that is designed to do exactly what you want to do and is made for this purpose. I think it runs 10 - 15 bucks a cartridge.
