I got a girl at my job who just put in one of those bass booming stereo systems in her car. Her rear bumper and trunk lid are vibrating quite a bit. Would putting Dynamat inside her trunk area cure this, or would she just be wasting money? Thanks. Its a 2001 Mustang convertible, if that matters.

I have never tried the stuff, but I have heard others have good results with, it's supposed to dampen vibrations so I'd say yes it would work.

It does work. A friend of mine does crazy custom audio installs. He uses dynamat to dampen the vibrations.

My entire rear hatch in my Z32 is dynamated and I had ZERO exterior vibrations or noises when I had 2 12's in the back. Now comparing the build quality of the mustang and the z... well......

i used dynamat in my show car all alpine amps over 2000 watts fiber optic crossovers with digital time delay....you get the idea over 25 k invested and you couldnt hear anything outside the car with the windows up dynamat in my opinion is well worth it for a noise barrier.

You may have to go through and tighten some bolts and screws to. If anything else is vibrating. My 200sx has dynamat inside the bumper cover, the trunk lid, door panels, little squares under the spoiler and tightened every bolt and screw I could find. No more rattles, very worth it

Wasting money on car audio systems is stupid. It is like ricing if you have a clue about how sound and audio systems work.
It is the worse environment for sound. Poor S/N due to road/wind/engine noise, weird surfaces for reflection and absorbtion and poor locations for speakers and close proximity to speakers make it just plain stupid to waste money on. It is like putting a stereo inside a washing machine!

People probably spend money on car stereos to...oh I don't know..listen to music.
Even if the car isn't the best place for a stereo, you can still get much better sound than stock.
I don't have the optimum (sp?) living room for a surround sound system.
But, I bought one anyway and it sounds much better than the two sh!tty speakers on the TV.

Some people like modding their car stereos like we like modding for performance. Your argument is equivalent to "Why make your car go faster when you still have to go the speed limit?" Yeah, it's hard to come up with a good answer, but that's just what people like to do.
Just like some prefer knitting to cars. Does it make sense to us? No. To them? Sure.
And of course the "fashion w/o brains" people are going to abuse it and misuse it, just like your local rice club with primered "JDM" body kits and monster tachs. Don't put down everybody else because retarded fashion slaves make them look bad.

I would put money into car stereo. Nothing is more annoying than harmonic hum of a vibrating panel.

Actually I am well versed in the sciences related to sound.
If your SPL is ~ 85dBm at your ears then the flattest perceived sound spectrum will be heard. OSHA now recommends no more than 85dBm spl (a weighted) for long periods to avoid hearing loss (Used to be 90). Given that the noise floor in a car is ~ 60 to 75dBm, the s/n ratio is ~ 10dB to 30dB (similar to a telephone). Cassette Tape is ~ 60dB and CD ~ 94dB S/N.
Turn it up and wreck your ears, keep it normal and too noisy, no win situation. The only way to go is a good set of closed back studio headphones or noise cancellation headphones but they are illegal.
If your stereo vibrates your bumper then it is way to load or the car is a POS or both.

I have lost 1/2 my hearing do to Rock-n-Roll music (former professional musician) and many hours on firearms ranges.
The excess volume is the problem.
I enjoy good music on a good system and spending money to hear it in a car is OK - But
when it's so loud that it rattles the car is just senseless. And the people in the car will lose one if not a couple of senses exposed too long.
And what about the rest of us on the street, in our homes who do not want to hear the boom boom whatever.
That's not just senseless it's inconsiderate and I can't help thinking that it'll tear up those speakers over time.
The point - quality over quanity.

I disagree, I think you can have a nice car stereo, with good sound, that is much better than stock without rattling the sh!t out of your car.

I could say "All race car drivers are stupid, because there is no need to go that fast in a car. If you crash, you can end up paralized, so your an idiot for racing."
You weigh the risks and decide to take them in order to enjoy something you love.

Actually I have been into audio kit since I was a pre-teen in the late 70's. I studied specs and theory as much as I could, played and recorded music ever since. I have great ears and studied the physics of sound in university and as a hobby.
I appreciate a quiet car and great stereo but the points I make are the sad reality. I guess I was venting my anger at this crazy ricey trend to install overpowered stereo systems in cars when loudness and cost are the build specifications, not quality of sound and safety. I hate hearing loud cars from within mine and those crappy ricer exhausts.
