Q:
Hey anyone else get their new issue of Car and Driver today?
There is a zzzzweeeeeet article on page 42 about the new Dodge Challenger coming out in about 2 years.
It looks like a 70 model only I think the new one looks better than the original! it's supposed to be a heavy pig at 4100 lbs, but with 425 HP and a possible optional 500HP engine I'd say it will be plenty entertaining!!
Anyway if through some miracle vast amounts of money fall into my lap by 2007, then that new Challenger will be parked next to my 240Z!!

I will pickup a copy for the weekend reading along with the afore mentioned Hemmings mag w/the Z article.
I am going to have to travel for the first three months of Jan, so all the good reading material I can acquire along with my digital Sudoku game should keep me entertained on flights.
Oh yeah, you better go get another lottery ticket! 2007 ain't that far away......hehehehehehehehe

It's still an "if".The problem is that right now it would have to be built at the plant that makes the Charger,Magnum & 300C.There is no capacity, presently. And they are running out of 6.1's now.
The Detroit auto show is up & coming.Public re-action might push them(MOPAR brass)into making it.
It is certainly the bitchinest car to come out of Detroit in a long friggin' time.

Hey that does look pretty good. Props to the domestic manufacturers for actually coming up with some aesthetically pleasing designs with the new [Roush, esp.] Mustang, new Camaro concept, Charger concept, etc. etc., something that's REALLY rare with new cars.

anyone else is fixated on the weight? 4100lb?! that's heavier than some trucks!
what are they thinking? i thought my CRX was heavy at 1800lb

Well think of it this way, if you are crashing into another car weight is your friend!! haha
If you crash into a tree however weight would NOT be your friend!! LOL

I am really curious how the hell they end up with 4100 lbs? What a pig to say the least. That is the best looking retro new car anyone has come out with though.
I raced some guy in my Z06 that was in one of those new Chargers and whipped him badly. we chatted afterwards and i told him if he weighed 1000 lbs less he might have a chance, but unfortunatly dodge doesnt have a clue on how to build a decent weighted performance car. it seems they still dont have a clue with the challenger either...

A. Very good style - hope it goes into production looking that good.
B. Why hit anything? - that's what breakes and Defensive Driving is for.
C. If you just have to hit trees - pick very small ones.

I guess they are going retro in every literal sense of the term including the weights! LOL! Weren't the original Mopars somewhat heavy also?

No-actually they were light compared to the competition.

4100 pounds?
hell, the new corvette is 1000 pounds lighter than that thing! yea, lugging a half ton of extra weight will make a difference. i would hope that the number is eventually closer to 3,200 (which should be a piece of cake with modern materials). if they keep the weight off and keep the looks, it'd be a super car.
come to think of it, drop about a full ton in weight and i bet that a 2,200 pound 240z with a decent engine should do well against such a portly car...
A:
Depends on which Mopars you are talking about. The factory SS cars from the 60's were suppose to be pretty light. But that was back in the day when they would strip a car, go in behind body panels and grind the hell out of them to lighten the cars up for NHRA or AHRA competition.
Now the land cruisers....yeah they were heavy as hell. NewYorkers, Imperials etc.....were pretty damn heavy, but that's cool in a road muncher. 383's and 440's didn't have any trouble pushing those big ole cars 20 cent a gallon gas....who cares how much throttle you use!!
The Darts, Dusters, early Cudas etc weren't all that heavy from what I could tell from driving them. One of the most impressive Mopars I ever drove was my buddies Dodge Dart with 340. Open the back barrels on that big ole thermoquad and you better be pointed straight, or you will find yourself in a ditch....and may anyway even if you were pointed straight!!

I heard that the Firepower (hemi based on the viper platform) was given a go by the big heads at dodge. That thing would be awesome and cheap too (compared to the viper) and it would give a huge boost in production to the manufacturing line.
The competition has a LOT of work to do before the piece of crap Camaro will be ready for the road. How can anyone be anxious to get a new chev or ford when Daimler-Chrysler group is producing such superior vehicles.

I had a 1968 Dodge Dart with a 383 4 bbl automatic. Wow, lots of fun, and fairly lightweight for the day.
That Challenger is so sweet, it will look good parked next to my 2007 Shelby GT500 Stang, and hopefully the 40th anniversary retro Camaro SS.

My first new car was a 1970 340 'Cuda. When I got married in 1972 my wife was driving a 1970 Challenger with a 318 & automatic. this new Challenger concept is an obvious freshening of that same design - much like the new Mustang.
My 'Cuda weighed in at 3,500 lbs and, at that weight, beat anything with a 383, 396 or 390. The only thing I couldn't beat was a new Z28 with the 350 because of his gearing.

wow, you had one of those?! i gotta say, i'm jealous of all you people that had a chance to buy cars in the 60s and 70s brand new, and for realistic prices! about half my dream car list is made up of muscle cars that were quite accesible to the normal young guy. but man, i sure am jealous that you had a 455. that thing must have really moved!

I really like the styling on the new Challenger but am miffed about the weight.
Unfortunately, these cars are targeting the 'mature' crowd that want the retro looks and the HP numbers, but want a nice, smooth, supple ride with every freakin' ammenity conceivable.
Ok, the other thing is the ugly ass wheels. Is it just me or would that thing look kick azz with a set of deep dish old school Centerline's? ;)

No, I think that's who their marketing team has identified as a profitable niche.
They're capitalizing on the nostalgia all the baby boomers feel for the cars from their youth, especially those that couldn't afford it then who now have the financial wherewithall to make the payments.

briann510--quess you never came up against my 70 challenger r/t. i was running 10 seconds flat in 76. it wasnt quite stock, had a 1965 413 wedge with t-10 a spd trans and 4:10 locked rear end. it would pull the front wheels 3 ft up hitting 2nd at 3800 on the tach . it would also sit in one spot and smoke the tires clear into 4th gear without touching the brake. i loved that car but in 78 a drunk driver t-boned it while i was sitting at a green light waiting to turn , he was in a dodge pickup and clocked at 102 mph just before hitting me.

Baby boomer market is right.
Look at the prices the 60's & 70's muscle cars are brining, even the lowliest just because they have the look and the nostalgia.
If you like pre- 55 (chevy's and others/ 55 to 57 are way over priced) -
you're in luck because the older generation is dying out and '20's to early'50's vintage cars are falling in price because the boomers grew up in the '60s & '70s and can now (usually) afford what they couldn't back then.
Yeah, you could buy a muscle car for 3K but how long could you maintain it making $1.50 to $2.00 an hour?
Insurance cost 1/3 the price of the car yearly if you could get insurance; don't even think about it if you had a bad driving record and then 1973 and gas shortage and prices hit.
Now in the late '70s muscle cars were what $300 if the wife would let you?
Who knew? Who could afford to stock up?
Now it's old farts trying to find an honest old fashion drive-in.

well im 49 years old and owned lots of cars over the years, especially in high school and a few years after i bought and sold alot. kept the sd all these years just cause its rare. as i get older i find myself wanting more toys...
in all honesty though ive enjoyed making the 240z fast over everything else ive owned or own. when i was in high school in early 70's and for the next 20 years after that i pretty much had some of the fastest street cars around. now my son is in that elite group with his car and with my 11 second Z06 im back at it again. gotta love life!
My Z06 is a black 50th anniversarry 2003. i dont drive it that much but when i do its driven very very hard. i dont baby it at all and have on ocassion taken it up to 175 in 5th. here is a link with some pictures:
